DS diagnosed with ADHD yesterday

Hi there everyone, My 6 yr old, (7 in 3 weeks) DS was diagnosed with ADHD yesterday. We have been having trouble with him for the last few years but it has really escalated since he started school last year. This year he is in 1st grade and and has has brought home at least 4 discipline reports since school started (one last week, one yesterday and one today). The one from last week was from him punching a kid in the stomach for calling him names. Today was for trying to flush a chip bag down the toilet at school. He is getting after school detension for that one on Monday! He's in first grade!

We have always wondered if he had this problem partially because he is so much more difficult to deal with and get to listen than our 5 yr old DD. About 2 weeks ago we had parent teacher conferences at school and his teacher and student teacher advised us that we should have him tested as they are having trouble with him school. He makes straight A's other than his behavior. So...I made an appointment for yesterday. He was officially diagnosed and given a prescription for 5mg of Aderall.

DH and I have many reservations about medicating him and after reading all the side effects and such about this type of medication I feel we have a justifiable reason to. His ped. told me that some of the medications can bring out ticks in children (which my son already has some of) and that makes me stress a little. He is supposed to start his medication tomorrow but I am a bit nervous about giving it to him. The doctor left it up to us as to whether or not to give it.

I guess, what I really want/need to know is, are there any of you out there whose children are on this medication and does medication REALLY make a difference? I am worried about doping my kid up and the medication causing him to become a very different person, one that we don't recognize or like. I don't want my son to be someone he isn't but I don't want him to struggle through life and be always in trouble because he can't control his behavior.

What experiences have you had with medication, and are there any other options that can truly work? I need all the advise/encouragement/help I can get. I know nothing about this stuff!

Welcome to the board, mom2gabez!  I'm glad you are looking into your son's behavior issues.  If you don't mind me asking, what did they do to diagnose your son, and who did the diagnosis?   If you didn't see a child psychologist or developmental pediatrician, it might something for you to look into.  They can help you deal with the behavior aspects as well, we learned different discipline methods and such to help besides just starting on meds.   Usually behavior therapy in conjunction with meds gets the best response.

When you find the med that works, it won't make them a zombie or be somebody they aren't.  What it allows them to do is to be the best they can be.  Right now, his lack of control over his behavior prevents others from seeing the true little person inside. It's not good for his self esteem or overall well being to constantly be the problem child.  My son's dad was very hesitant about trying meds, but after you hear all the risk factors as they grow older, it's the necessary evil.  Meds allow my son to focus in school, get  better grades, and just feel overall better about himself.  Before we started them several years ago, his self esteem was nil.    It did take several meds to find one that worked the best with the least side effects.  He has tic problems as well, showed up the worst on Vyvanse, so now he is on Strattera.  I'm glad to say the tics are gone, only show up a little when he's really stressed or anxious.

I hope that you see some improvement in your son's behavior, good luck!  Please keep us updated on how he's doing.

Thanks for the response. Its been almost 2 weeks since he started and DH and i have both agreed to have the pediatrician switch the meds. He is doing better at school but I am seeing side effects that I just dont like. The tics are a lot worse, he is aggressive with his little sister, angers very easily, seems and looks exhausted all the time, and has mood swings. None of these make up for his focusing better in school. I dont honestly know how long it is supposed to take to affect him but already i want another medication. I may ask about Strattera as I know several others whose children have used it. His pediatrician diagnosed him. I havent been given any information about behavioral therapy. I personally feel his behavior has gotten worse since starting the meds. I will look up different options of medication and see what his ped. recommends trying next.
