Focalin Users - Question

Hi I'm new to this board - my son (8 yrs. old) was diagnosed with ADHD, Aspergers, and anxiety earlier this year. We finally decided to try an ADHD medication for keeping him focused at school. He started on 5mg with barely a notice of effectivness. His psychiatrist upped the dose yesterday to 10mg. Today was his first day taking 10mg. AFter 30-45 minutes of taking it this morning, he became quit upset and complaining that he was SO thirsty and couldn't drink enough. I can't find a side effect of thirst/dry mouth, but know that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I'm wondering what side effects your children have from 10mg or more of Focalin? He was showing the lack of appetite and harder time falling asleep on the 5mg. I know he won't take 10mg tomorrow . . . . Any thoughts are appreciated.

Thank you!

Wow, that is so impressive that his math scores doubled overnight! That is the results I was hoping for, but didn't get. I'm going to try to get him to take the 10mg one more time before school starts up again. Just to see. Thank you again for your information, it is very helpful to hear what other people are going through.

Have a wonderful holiday season.

You might ask the doctor about Concerta. Our psychiatrist told us they're very similar but processed slightly differently. Our son processed Focalin within hours so we stopped it. Concerta has worked great for him and lasts him longer. I'm wondering if you were happy with the results with Focalin (aside from side effects) whether Concerta would do the same. We found they worked identically with our son, again just with Focalin konking out too soon.

Aspy kids often need OT because of muscle issues. It may also be worth getting his eyes checked to see if they are moving together properly. Vision therapy may be helpful if he is seeing in double vision. My son was diagnosed with ADHD about a year ago, we also started vision therapy. Aside from reading improvements, he now can concentrate and sit still much better. Before, to see things "normal" he had to move to make the stuff on the page sit still and to give him some depth perception. His writing has improved, he reads more and easier (he presented as dysgraphic and dyslexic before.) It may not be what you need, but it can't hurt checking it out to see if it could help. You need a developmental optometrist. Here are web pages that can help you find an appropriate dr.

There is no Max dose for we or ae, Meds are dosed by symptoms.

Cute picture! Thanks for the information. How old/weight is your son? I ask because I'm guessing there is a maximum dosage for age/weight. Benjamin is now refusing to take the medication at all. I'm going to leave it alone for the break and maybe try again before school starts up. Thank you again!

Hi, thanks for your reply. He took 5mg for about a month (I say "about" cause I stopped it over Thanksgiving and some weekends). He never complained on 5mg. I got him to take 5mg after the one day of 10mg and he started complaining he was thirsty again. The next day he refused to take it at all. Now we're on break. I don't feel like I can force him to take it and want to start looking at other options, like having an aid.

Can I ask, did you start another medication for your DD? If so which one? And any problems?

Thanks again!

How long did he take 5 mgs? It can take a couple of weeks to really see if it is going to be effective.

Dry mouth is one of the problems my DD had, and it isn't something that went away, it was fairly consistent and one of the reasons we stopped Focalin. It was a vicious cycle, drink/pee, drink/pee...and was disruptive.
