Going for evaluation ADD/ODD

Hi,
My name is Stephanie and I have a 5 y/o son Nathan that started Kindergarten this year. He had a screening and was placed in an all day K that is for kids that need a little extra attention for one reason or another. 80% of the kids in the district are half day. He has had a very hard time adjusting to K and we have been in constant communication with the teacher. We are trying to alter his diet and she set up a special sticker chart just for him were he gets a sticker for every 1/2 he can stay on task. Although the school didn't think it was time to consult the Dr, I called anyway and took him in. The Dr thought there was enough evidence to have him get a further evaluation. I wrote down a list of all of the things that he has issues with listening and behavior and the Dr talked to him and saw that he has a problem focusing. He ruled out eye and hearing problems too. Can anyone tell me what to expect at this evaluation? A friend had her son taken to a psychiatrist and after talking with the family for 1/2 they said the kid needed medicated. I am not against medicating my son if thats what he needs, I just hope that they suggest trying some other things first!! thank you for any advice.

HI

It would ndepend on who is doing the eval. We saw a Neuropsychologist, and he did IQ testing, ordered bloodwork and EKG's, observations, and other testing. The entire process took about 8 weeks.

A child may HAVE ADHD, but it is not what they ARE. Never tell a child they ARE ADHD.

I looked up the dr we are referred to, and he is a psychologist and does counseling. We actually were given a choice of 2 and I am going to make sure I'm not getting the one that my friend had!

30 minutes to meds is ridiculous. I'd expect to fill out a *lot* of forms, and I'd expect you to have a form to give his teacher to fill out. That's minimum. Mine also had various testing done--in our case through the school, but it'd've been done with the Dr. if we hadn't just had it done at the school--WISC (intelligence) test, various detailed tests...the point is to determine if there are any *other* things that could be creating the same symptoms. Heck, even sleep apnea can cause the inattentiveness of ADHD (sorry, don't know as much about the ODD side). And you can get learning disabilities causing issues too, of course, important to check for those if there's anything specific there (they can, of course, be there *with* the ADHD as well...). Lots & lots to eliminate--there must be a decent list on the net somewhere...

Good luck--open mind, engaged brain, you'll be fine--can't imagine going straight for meds unless you've tried all the non-med ways first; we read lots about ADHD & it was so frusterating, I kept looking for things to try, but no, did that, did that...some of it is basic parenting/expectations/supporting the need for routine & easy predictable transitions at that age.

Thanks! I have the appointment for tomorrow at 1pm. When they called to schedule, I asked if they were open to other things than medications, and they said absolutely. It sounds like they would try many other things first and that is exactly what I am looking for. Yesterday when my son came home he told me there is something wrong with him. He said he tries to be good but things pop into his head and he just has to do them. I asked him if someone said that to him, and he said no. He came up with that all on his own and It tore me up inside. I just want to do whatever I can to help him. He means the world to me...
