hello I am new here and I have a 4 year old son who I think is ADHD. I am researching this and looking for answers. He is always going, he can never be quiet. He will be up late at night and still be going and going. He has no interest in pre-school activities. He is just barely singing his ABC's. I think he knows them he just won't take the time to sing them. He makes me so stressed by the end of the day, I am constantly telling him get out of this get out of that. He has problems with using the restroom in time. I have asked his doctor about it he says he is to young to worry.I am so tired of running around like a crazy. He is wearing my whole family out. I need some help on what to do next.

TIA,

Amie

I also forgot to add that he was on medication from 2 days old for seizures. He was taking phenobarbital and tegretol. He no longer takes either medication.

He has #2 accidents. It is not terrible it seems that he holds it so long that he doesn't want to take the time to sit and wait. It is never a lot. It is only just a tiny bit, until he realizes that he must go to the restroom. I am not sure how to handle this. He is very intelligent, he just does not care about any of that. I can't seem to get him to understand how nasty it is.

Yup, that sounds normal for a little boy. My oldest son wasn't completely, successfully using the toilet all the time until he was 4 yrs 2 months old. My middle son just turned 4. He's been doing great with potty for several months. Not too many accidents. But he still will NOT sit on the toilet to go poop. At least he's not going in his underpants anymore. He puts a pull-up on when he has to poop. I know of so many little boys who weren't fully toilet trained until during the year they were 4 yrs old. And all the little girls I know seem to be toilet trained when they are still 2. Such a difference!

Amie,

Welcome to our board. I can totally understand what you are going through. It totally sounds like my son, to a T! We are having him tested but he's 4.5yo (5yo in February). I can tell you this, some of it is age appropriate, some of it is conditioning and others of it might very well be ADD/ADHD.

One of the things I've just found out is that my DS and my DD were just recently diagnosed with CELIAC DISEASE. It is a disease that is genetic and you can't digets BARLEY, WHEAT, GLUTEN or MALT. Since they can't digest it, they also can't take in the nutrient such as Iron and other vitamins/minerals needed to get the body going. According to the book this could be where my DS gets his ADHD symptoms from. It'll take time to tell 100% for sure, in the meantime we are still having him tested.

The psychologist that we are seeing says that his age group leaves very limited resources for testing and that he still can't be 100% sure about it. Just food for thought. Still if you are thinking he's not being academically challenged or that he might not be learning I would have him tested. Have you tried contacting your local school district to see if they have an Early Intervention Program for the preschool kids? If so, they can test him through there and see what's going on.

I'm glad you found us and I look forward to seeing more from you about what is going on with DS and what, if anything you've found.

Thanks to everyone! He is starting pre-school on Thursday I am going to ask them about the early intervention testing. His preschool is thru the local elementary school. So hopefully they can help. It is so rough on everyone. Exspecially him.I feel like I am constantly correcting him.

I will keep everyone informed.

Thanks again,

Amie

Amie,

Ask the preschool to test him through a SST and that you would like to do an IEP (Individualized Educational Program) for him. If not, at least a section 504 will help for now, provided they find something.

I'm not sure about the background you have, but Celiac can be alone or in combination with ADD/ADHD and will really draw out those symptoms. I'm still learning about the Celiac Disease and will suggest you have your son tested. It's a blood test, non-evasive and will be fairly simple to have done. I would ask your Pediatrician to refer you to a GI specialist to rule it out just so that you can say you've done whatever you can with the pediatrician to figure out what's going on. It won't hurt to at least rule this out.

I'm begining to consider having my SD tested for this as well. But I'll wait until after I've been tested for really pushing that issue.

Anyhow, I wish you luck and you don't neessarily have to wait until he enters the preschool, call the school district and at least leave a message for the person in Child Welfare and Attendance in charge of this area. That should get things going for your.
