Ok I need some massive help. I have my dd on concerta 36 mg. I am looking to change medications because I hate the way she is when she is coming off the concerta. Can some one please give me some advice on different kinds of medications that they use with ad/hd. My oldest son was on ritalin and I hated that I really would like something that she takes once a day and that won't leave her wired when she comes down from the medication after it wears off. She hates taking a sleeping pill everynight..

Well, there is Adderall XR, what my son takes. He couldn't take any for of ritalin because of the rebound problems. We tried Strattera for a while, not much change from adderall. We also tried Dexedrine, he had a horrible reaction to that with his mood disorder. There is also ones we havn't tried metadate ER, & metadate CD, Focalin, Dextrostat.

If 2 or 3 stimulants don't work for your child, second line treatments might be tried, including tricyclic antidepressants (Imipramine or Desipramine) or bupropion (Wellbutrin). Clonidine is also sometimes used, especially for children that have ADHD and a coexisting condition.

Has she ever had a med break? How did that go? Was she able to sleep? I am asking b/c if she was not able to sleep while not taking the ADHD meds, then it may not be the meds that are keeping her awake. My son has sleep problems and had ot take clonidine to get him to sleep, even then he wold wake up 2-3 times a night. Now he takes seroquel 3 times a day & his sleep is normal, for the most part. Sometimes he has a hard time falling alseep, and sometimes he just doesn't sleep at all. But all that goes with his BP.

We use metadate. We tried the concerta at the start, but it didn't do much and he was up too late. Metadate is only once a day and it last about 8 to 10 hours. I have not noticed a dramatic change in him when he is coming off of it. He does still have to take clonodine at night and now he takes strattera in the evening. But he was on the metadate for 1 1/2 years by itself and it was great. We started having sleep problems last year and after many tries at different things to help him sleep, we went to the clonodine. We just started the strattera 5 weeks ago and so far so good. It is helping him in the evenings and the mornings when the metadate isn't working in his system. He took 20 mg of the metadate when he first started it, and about 4 months later we had to up him to 40 mg which is where he still is and has been for 1 1/2 years. He will have been on the metadate for 2 years in November.

Good Luck,

Jen

Thanks a lot for the input. My dd slept well until she reached about 3 and a half and had eye surgery done. Since then if she goes to sleep at midnight she is up at 3 am. She has never had a reaction to

Thank you so much for your input on the medications. I wasn't sure when I started posting in here that I would be able to learn anything. Me having 4 kids with ad/HD I am still kind of learning about all of it. I was never one to give the doctors a hard time until I was told that my dd couldn't get the meds she needed after we moved because they thought I was lying. From that point on I started fighting and looking for things to help my kids out..
