If your child takes Intuniv......

If your child takes Intuniv, what time of day do you give the medication?

My son was on clonidine for a few months and the medication worked well for him except for the drowsiness. It became so bad he was falling asleep in school. We tried changing the dose and when it was given but we just couldn't find a balance.

Two weeks ago, we started Focalin XR. What a nightmare. He became more aggressive, unmanageable, and could not sleep. And this was on the lowest dose of the medicaiton.

Today I spoke with his neurologist and we have decided to try nonstimulant Intuniv. I know this medication can make you drowsy so I am curious as to what time of day it works best. I know it needs to build up in the body so if you started it in the morning, did it cause sleepiness during the school day? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I'm tired of the medication-go-round. I hope this medication works.

HI, and welcome

Intuniv can be given at night I believe, it states taken at bedtime in the dosing info. It is basically the same med as Tenex( guanfacine, a Blood pressure med), and very similar to Clonidine ( Catapres, also a blood pressure med). It should not be given with a high fat meal however.

My son takes Intuniv and has been for about a month. The biggest issue we had was the aggression and anger along with the inablity to focus but when given Vyvance it turned him into a monster. We were on tenex for a month before and it was wearing off to soon so we moved to Intuniv for my child. With the Tenex he was tired but only for the first 3 days or so and when we would up the dose he would be tired for a few days. Now though he is full of energy and back to himself without the drowsiness. I give it first thing in the morning and he would nap around 12 or so or sometimes as late as 3 for the first days. Now he hardly ever falls asleep. He is on 2mg and 4 yrs old.
