So DS is going to be 7 in January. He is ADHD combined (though the impulsivity gives us the most grief). He was tested before his 5th birthday (too early, I think, but that's a long story). We are waiting for another full evaluation at the hospital (excellent, multidisciplinary, full assessment) but that could take up to 6 months to get in.

He is currently on biphentin (a long acting ritalin available in Canada). I see some improvement, but not with the explosions. He's a mild kid until he gets super frustrated (mostly at school...another long story) and then he explodes (non-violent, just reallllllly loud) and returns to his quieter self.

For those with kids like this, what meds are you using? What has anyone found works better on impulsiveness?

Any info would be great.

Maybe it is time for a med change, or an increase in dosage? I am not sure what is available in Canada, ut once you get the

A child may HAVE ADHD, but it is not what they ARE. Never tell a child they ARE ADHD.

It definitely sounds like the medication dosage isn't high enough or it just isn't the right medication for him. Our six-year-old son also can be explosive, but when all is right with his meds, it's a non-issue (other than when it wears off). Right now he's on Concerta (a long-acting Ritalin) ... not sure if it's available in Canada. Just keep in mind that what works for one child can be awful for another. It can take some trial and error to get it just right for your child.

Good luck! Hope the appointment clears things up for you.

Sounds a lot like my son. The stimulants seemed to make his explosiveness even worse. Right now he is on Strattera and clonadine.
