Introducing myself

Hello everyone,

I was a member here years ago back when my daughter was first born. She's 6 now and looking at first grade in the fall.

About 1 1/2 years ago she suddenly became "hard to handle" at daycare. It was sudden and overwhelming to me and her care providers. Long story short, two daycare dismissals and MANY visits to doctors and psychotherapists, we finally got the diagnosis of ADD. She's on Adderall XR now with the thought that we might also be adding Wellbutrin for her depression (hard to imagine ANY child could be depressed, especially at such a young age *sigh*) and on the very long (2 month) wait list for a psychiatrist to help her with her anger and mood swings.

My angel is such a loving and giving child it just breaks my heart. I know you all have been there in once capacity or another. She's going to be ok, I know this. I'm going to be ok (probably!) I'd love to join your discussions and see if I can get some input and an occasional shoulder.

Thanks for having me!

Hey, I just posted to you on the 6/7 year old board.

My oldest is almost 8 and was Dx with ADD a little over a year ago. He started with Ritalin and we switched to Concerta earlier this spring. What a difference that has made. He's gone from scraping the bottom of 1st grade last year to making Principal's List twice this year and having straight A's in Conduct.

My youngest is 6 and was diagnosed this past Februrary with ADHD. Just when I was ready to pull all of his hair out (or mine), he made a big turn around in school. So I have not used medication with him yet. He got a gold ribbon for conduct this past 9-weeks, after some very tough times in school this year.

Yes, you will find plenty of company over here. And lots of support.

Hi & Welcome! My son will be 8 in Aug. BOY do I know how you feel. My son showed signs of depression when he was 4, only he showed it as anger too. It was a very trying time for my family. The decision to add medications to his ADHD meds was a very hard one for me. I felt like I was trying to medicate him into behaving. LOL to me, it didn't work out that way. Now, several meds later, we are still trying to keep him stable.

Hi, and welcome to our family. As you said, she'll be OK. Both of you will. ADD/ADHD isn't fatal ... it's more of a 'condition' that needs some help in overcoming. But, having the answers as to WHAT is going on is the first (and most critical) step in your journey. You have the 'what' ... now it's the 'how,' and that will all come, too. Since you're new to the med-stuff, let me forewarn you (in case the doc didn't) that not all meds work the same for all kids, and it often takes 2-3 adjustments/changes before you find the right one (or right combination) for your child. You may not even need the Wellbutrin if the Adderall XR ends up working. I always felt my DS had depression and anxiety issues, but it turned out it was undiagnosed ADHD that was causing a lot of his behavioral issues ... and once we understood what we were dealing with AND treating it with meds, the other stuff sort of disappeared. Good luck ... it is a long journey, but as they say, a journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step. You're on the right path! And, the fact that you got answers while your DD is still so young is to be commended!

Welcome to the board,

My name is Elspeth and I have a 4.5 year old son with ADHD and BP he currently takes Ritalin SR and seroquel.

This board has been a great resourse and of course a great place to vent frustration when necessary.

Talk away

Hi, and welcome!

You'll find a lot of great advice, experience, and support here. We have a 5 yo ds, diagnosed as ADHD/ODD/mood disorder NOS (possible early onset bipolar disorder). He's now mood stable on Trileptal, which has also diminished his ADHD symptoms.

Hope you don't mind my asking, I'm just curious -- you mentioned you were a member here years ago when your daughter was first born. Were you suspecting ADHD so early, or do you have another ADHD child? Do you have any idea why she was so suddenly hard to handle at daycare, and was she not hard to handle at home? Has she been on anything other than Adderall XR? Since the different stimulants have different side effects, I wondered if you'd tried a different one?

You may already know this, but you might want to keep calling the psychiatrist's office to see if there are cancellations. Often you can get a much earlier appt that way.

Good luck, and keep us posted --

Hi Melissa,

Ok, I goofed. I was on here when Taylor was first born on the age appropriate boards. She just got the diagnosis of ADD last week but has been quite a handful for 1 1/2 years now. She was placed on a medication about a year ago that, when I brought it to the pharmacist (who is a friend), got a raised eyebrow from her. I can't remember the name of the medication. Taylor was on it for only two weeks because her therapist at the time thought that sleep apnea (which she had horribly) was the cause for her behavior issues. Her tonsils came out in that two week period, so I thought I was in the clear and life would continue as it had before all of this. Her sleep apnea was cured, but not the behavior. I was told recently that it just happened that the apnea and the ADD occured at the same time and neither was related. She's getting some help and comfort from the local crisis center who will manage her in some capacity until we can get her into the psychiatric program at the local hospital. It's just so sad to me that child psychiatrists are so hard to come by. I'm glad lots of kids are getting treatment, but I'm frustrated that mine isn't one of them.

I'm interested in seeing if adding the Wellbutrin will help, but I also question the Adderall XR. She was started at 10mg for two weeks then increased to 15mg for one month the another increase to 20mg, which she has been on for 6 weeks now. I notice a huge improvement in her but I hear from her teacher that there is no difference at school. Perhaps the teacher is hypercritcal? She's had some challenges with Taylor this year. I'm intrigued to see if a new teacher next year might have a positive influence. I'm sensing alot of negativity from her kindergarten teacher at this point in the school year. We're going to try the YMCA summer program which is held at Taylor's elementary school and I'm just praying that she doesn't get kicked out.
