Introducing myself... /m

Hi! I'm Jodi. My son Justin was just formally diagnosed last week with ADHD and possible early ODD (we've suspected for about 4 years). He has an appointment this afternoon with the physician to start treatment. DH is also ADHD and is on Strattera, as is MIL and a nephew. Guess you could say it's a family affair! ;-)

Anyway, I'm focusing now on reading everything I can get my hands on. I've just finished ADHD by (Peter Wender?) and Wild Child by Don Mordasini. Next in line is Change Your Brain Change Your Life by Daniel Amen and You Mean I'm Not Lazy, Stupid or Crazy?! by Kate Kelly and Peggy Ramundo, both at the suggestion of the psychologist who diagnosed DH and DS.

Welcome. I've got a 7 year old, too. Almost 8, though, and going into 2nd grade.

One of my favorites was "Driven to Distraction".

Hope to see you around. This board is a great source of support.

I'm Mary - my husband and I have a 7 year old (just turned) also going to 2nd grade. He's been diagnosed w/ ADHD - took a while to figure it out because he is also highly gifted - how could a kid with an A average be ADHD? Well - he is - mostly the impulsive and hyperactive behavior is our biggest problem. We just started meds about 4 months ago - 18 mg of Concerta - really helping - plus we're going to counseling.

I've read lost of books, too. And - there is a lot of info in the internet.

We are working with a book for kids about ADHD with our son - it is called:

Learning to Slow Down & Pay Attention: A Book for Kids about ADD

by Nadeau & Dixon

We read a couple of chapters a night and talk about the suggestions. The main thing for us has been to talk about it and to link with other parents - like through this great online support.

Good luck to you and welcome.

Hi Jodi, and welcome. Glad to have you with us. Knowledge is power, so the more you understand the ADHD/ODD stuff, the better equipped you'll be to deal with it. If you're interested, I have a website all about ODD: In there is a book review section that might give you some other reading ideas.
