Our son's case is pretty severe (he's also in first grade), so medications were the only solution. We had tremendous success with one for a while (Concerta), but just got a horrible report from school yesterday and will need to make some sort of change.

I can relate to having a young child and going through this experience. We started getting help from Kaiser when our son was three (he was kicked out of preschool) but didn't get an official diagnosis until he was five. They could only tell us he had strong indicators of ADHD until that point. We had to try medication because our son had aggression and was a danger to others. Unfortunately, the aggression has returned after about three years of being gone, so we're back to square one.

Good luck! I hope you can find a solution that works well for your daughter.

Hi. I'm new here too. my 6 year old first grader was jsut diagnosed last week. School started this week. He also has dyslexia.

We're also against using medication unless absolutely necessary. We're trying some dietary changes. The Feingold diet, from what I've managed to learn so far is really strict.

I'm starting slowly- by giving omega 3 supplements, eliminating most sugar, and getting rid of foods that have artificial colorings, flavorings, preservatives etc..all things that could make adhd symptoms worse.

I will get Dillon a blood test as well to see if hes low in magnesium or other minerals that adhd children are traditionally deficient. I will prob. get him allergy tested as well for things liek wheat and dairy( I just hope he doesn't have a sensitvity or allergy to these things- that would be too much right now).
