intuniv v's tenex

Hi all,

I have a ds (9) who has multiple dx (Autism/Adhd/Mood disorder/OCD/Anxiety). Essentially it all stems from his primary dx, high functioning autism.

We changed pdocs a few months ago and love him. But we've been playing the medication carousel again. Currently ds does well on focalin xr for his adhd and zyprexa for his mood. We had to add prozac for OCD (that became worse after a strep infection).

However, his impulsiveness is not totally taken care of with the focalin (although it helps about 85%). The pdoc added intuniv, which of course is a tier 3 med with our insurance, thus very pricey co-pay. If we switched to generic tenex (same med in short release v's xr) the co-pay drops to virtually nothing. We are using a two week starter pack at present but are wondering is push comes to shove could he get the same affect from two doses of tenex as opposed to intuniv once a day.

Any thought?

Dee

I would try it and see what happens. The only problem you have now is since he has been on the Long acting med, he will have to be weaned off of it.

A child may HAVE ADHD, but it is not what they ARE. Never tell a child they ARE ADHD.

"PANDAS" is an acronym for Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal infections. Following, is a GREAT study, showing with clarity that the OCD is INDEED triggered by the strep(in a certain percentage of kids), and that the OCD can be treated by treating the STREP with antibiotics and immunoglobulin, instead of adding more psychiatric meds.

This is a very good overview of PANDAS.

I totally understand your plight with meds and $$$. My DS is also on intuniv and I had a post about it a couple of months ago. DS was put on Intuniv before it was even available in the pharmacies. DS is diagnosed with ADHD and a suscipsion of Aspergers. We did Intuniv... with their "impressive" trial pack. And by week 3 DS woul barely stay awake in school. He had fallen asleep in a movie (at the theater!).. and more... We finally had a follow-up with Doc and he had us stay at 2mg.. which is the week 2 dose.

We know he has PANDAS, and he has been on a full course of antibiotics; we are effectively dealing with the residual of the brain injury now.

Our insurance changes tomorrow and it appears intuniv is cheaper with the new plan, so we will see. We go back to the pdoc in 3 weeks.

Thanks all
