HI, and welcome

Glad you finally got a diagnosis, but if possible I would see a Psychiatrist for meds. Some ped's just do not have the knowledge to diagnose or prescribe meds.

Concerta is Methylphenidate, the same med as Ritalin, the same meds as Biphentin also. It is time released, and lasts 12 hours.

Adderall is a 4 hour med, it is Dextroamphetamine.

Side effects can and sometimes do incliude sleeplessness, appetite supression, but these usually wear off with time.

A child may HAVE ADHD, but it is not what they ARE. Never tell a child they ARE ADHD.

There really isn't a "good" or "bad" medication. Different kids have different results with medications. Our son has done extremely well on Concerta. We've had to adjust the dosage over time, but have stayed with this one for quite a while. He did terrible on Adderall -- made him go into random rages as it wore off (have since learned it has the nickname "Maderall"). However, some kids do great on Adderall with no side effects, so don't rule it out.

The only side effect we saw with Concerta was a decreased appetite, but that got much better over time. Otherwise, it made huge, terrific changes in his behavior.

I would talk out the pros and cons of the options with the doctor and try to narrow it down based on what you're comfortable with.

Good luck,
Michelle
