Hello I am new here and wanted to introduce myself. My name is Abby and I have three boys. Two have been diagnosed with AD/HD my 7 year most recently at two months ago and my oldest 11 year old three years ago. They have both been prescribed Vyvanse 11 year old gets 30 mg and 7 year old gets 20 mg. I am curious as to those that are using meds if you are giving them to your children on the weekends and summers when not in school or do you continue to give them. I go back and forth as to how I feel about this and would like some input from other moms that are dealing with these same issues. Thanks!! Also anyone else here using vyvanse? I have a couple questions about that too!! :)

Hi, and welcome!

MY DD is 11, and has ADHD /inattentive. She only takes meds on school days, never weekends, holidays, or during the summer. DD is not hyper, has no behavior problems other than the normal 11yo girl things. She doesn't do school work on those days, so why take them.

I think it would depend on the type of ADHD you kids have. I know my nephew NEEDS his meds on holidays and weekends, but he has ADHD /combined. Some kids don't do well starting and stopping meds either. It would depend on the child.

A child may HAVE ADHD, but it is not what they ARE. Never tell a child they ARE ADHD.

Hi Abby!

I'm brand new today to the board as well, so I probably won't be much help to you ---- yet.

My son has never taken a med holiday. He is 10 and on Concerta. He has forgotten to take his meds a couple of days and it was a disaster. If you can do it I say Great go for it, my son couldn't handle it.

I do keep giving them to him:
1) In 6th grade, there's generally homework to do on the weekends.
2) Even if not 1), there's always a sport, or church, both of which get badly affected by the inattentive part.
3) He's behind, socially. He needs every bit of social interaction while under meds--the only way he seems to learn it--that he can get. So, yeah, in summer, since we both work, he's in summer camps. He has to have the meds, both to learn the social stuff and just so that he doesn't drive everyone completely insane ;}.

Though if I *could* reasonably give med breaks, I might--it's just too large an effect on my kid. There's too much he needs to be learning OUT of school!

mY CHILD WAS ON vYVANSE FOR 1 YEAR AND RECENTLY JUMPED TO CONCERTA. He forgot his meds one day before school and wow what a difference. He was a little monster. We give everyday because he cannot handle going back and forth right now. He also has Boy scouts and alot of weekend outings with them and he needs to be medicated for the activities. So far we don't have a booster for evenings and afternoons but are thinking of a small booster of Focalin on boy scout meeting days.
