Pediatrician's aren't qualified to diagnose ADHD, unless they are developmental pediatricians (found at Children's Hospitals) or specialize in the condition. Otherwise, you want to talk to a child psychiatrist or neuropsychologist (will likely vary in your health plan which one is covered. Kaiser will send you to a psychiatrist for the evaluation). They have the expertise necessary to diagnose ADHD.

Also, request in writing an evaluation of your son by your school district psychologist. Legally, they have to do this if you request it. They can't diagnose anything, but can help set up special accommodations at school for your son through things called an IEP or 504 plan. If your son does have ADHD or another condition, these plans can be useful supplements to treatment and can also give him assistance in class until his symptoms are better under control.

Trust your gut instinct on this. If things seem not quite right, chance are that's the case. Our son's ADHD symptoms started appearing at age two and I can't begin to tell you how many people blew off my concerns. The best thing you can do as a mom is pay attention to your concerns and follow through on at least making sure with specialists that all is normal.

Good luck!

Thank you very much. I am asking around for some referrals. There is a doctor in the next town over who is a developmental pediatrician so maybe he might work. I also might switch peds to someone who could recommend a specialist.
