question about medications

So my 7 year old was just prescribed Concetra this is our first experience with medication for ADHD. We've been seeing a nurse practitioner because its easier to get in. His regular pedi moved to a different office, same practice, I would love to keep seeing him but can't get there, the other 2 dr i really like are on maturnity leave, and we've seen the NP before and we like her, she consulted with 2 other dr in office as well on his case first. We finally get to pharmacy this morning, our insurance is an issue they want it all mail away if not it HAS to be an assigned CVS, Well 2 issues no DEA number and Dr didn't sign just NP, call pedi office they have NEVER heard of this they have NP write these all the time but had DH go up there get a Dr to sign and get the DEA

Now next issue is people are telling me you can't mail away yet when I checked the cost on my Rx plan (its seperate from my health insurance) it gave me a price for pick and mail away for this extact medicine, so can you use mail away? For us its a 1/3 of the cost if we can mail away. Obviously we need to get dosage down but why would it be on the website if not an option?

Just seems I am getting so much different information.

You definitely can't get it through the mail. Believe me, I tried through Kaiser because their pharmacy handles way too many prescriptions and the wait time is terrible. No. You have to show up, show your drivers license and sign off on it all. It takes a full day before the prescription is even processed because it has to go through so many internal sign-offs due to all of the regulations. Sounds like there's just a mistake on your insurance website, because I've never heard of anyone being able to get ADHD medication through the mail.

I agree with the pp. As much as you like the NP, she's not a specialist in dealing with ADHD. You really need to be working with someone like a child psychiatrist for the best help with medications. Specialists know all of the options inside-out and are best qualified to manage them.

Best of luck to you!

As the others said you cannot get Concerta thru mail order because it is a controlled substance, federal law prohibits it. You also cannot get auto refills on it - you will likely have to physically pick up the rx from the doctor and take it to the pharmacy. Our doc cannot even fax it over to the pharmacy. It works out OK, as your dr. should be monitoring your child's height and weight while taking the med. We have to go in once a month for a height and weight check and to pick-up the paper rx.

There are many different ADHD meds, so as the others said it is best to work with a psychiatrist to manage medications. They have a wealth of experience dosing these meds and are up to date on all the research, side effects, etc.

Good Luck ~ JoAnna

Some states may prohibit it through the mail, but in North Carolina you can definitely do a three month mail order.
