Questions about adderall xr side effects

Thank you all for your responses to my question below. It really helps to talk to others going through the same thing. As per the doctor's instructions I gave ds 1/2 a capsule 3 days and today he had a full 20mg capsule. I felt a little funny about doing it because he seemed okay on the 10mg and I wonder if his dose should stay there. My question is about side effects. He had the usual difficulty falling asleep and his appetite is definitely decreased. He normally has a huge appetite and is a little husky, so I'm not too worried about a lack of appetite. One big change I have noted is his emotional status. He is normally an outgoing lively child. I consider it a personality trait seperate from his adhd symptoms which is mostly impulsivity, impatient, hyperactivity issues. Nothing upsets him and he just usually goes with the flow. The kind of thing where he doesn't recognize when someone might be teasing him, if you know what I mean, because nothing affects him emotionally. Well, what a difference on adderall xr. The other day we were at Busch Gardens and he normally goes on all the big roller coasters, no problem. This last time he refused and cried. Said he was scared. We went to the new haunted lighthouse movie exhibit they have and he freaked out. It wasn't even scary and he cried...we had to leave. Then today he was at a friend's house and someone said something mean to him and he came home and cried. He said he hated this friend and he never wanted to play with him again. This kid isn't very nice, but like I said, ds usually just brushes it off and doesn't care. Then, the icing on the cake was when his grandmother and cousin came to take him to the movies and he didn't want to go. He just wanted to stay home and play Legos by himself. Even seemed sad to go, which he did finally do.

I'm considering calling the doctor and getting 10mg capsules because that seemed to cause less emotional instability for him and definitely helped his adhd symptoms. I have a hard time breaking up the capsule and I'm not sure I'm giving him a 1/2 dose or not. I read on their website, too, to give the entire capsule since there are different acting beads in there.

Sorry this got so long. I'm just so confused and want to do the right thing.

Thanks,

Laura

This emotional side effect is the reason we are switching tomorrow! I don't post much but do lurk....anway...DS age 7.5yrs has been on Adderal XR 10mg for 7 months now and the past month he has been so emotional, cring at the drop of a hat, and recenty becoming angry when he is upset. This past week he told me he couldn't stop being upset. So after a call to the Dr we first upped the adderal XR to 15mg that was a nightmare, then went back to the 10mg for a few days...got ahold of the Dr and tomorrow we are switching to Concerta 18mg. I'm dying to see how this one effects him...will the emotional roller coster and anger go away??? I can only hope....

we had no appetite problems atleast (thank goodness DS is only 44lbs!!) but the falling to sleep at 10:30pm lately is driving us nuts!!!

Good luck to you, or DS id dgreat on 10mg for a while and it was our first med so I was calling it luck! But now...

I hope you find something that works...is this the first type of Med you have tried?? Have you tried the 15mg??

Good luck, I'll check back soon...

Hi Jenell,

Thanks for your response. The 20mg yesterday seemed to be too much. His behavior while the meds were active was great, but once they wore off the let down for him was awful. We took our boat out on a lake near our house and my dh went out by himself to test the boat since he just fixed it himself. Well, ds freaked out. He started screaming and crying running towards the boat dock telling dad to come back, wait. It was awful. It took a good hour to calm down. Today, I gave him just 10mg. I called the psychiatrist and he's away this week, but the nurse said to give him just 1/2 a capsule and when he got back in the office on Monday, he would prescribe the 10mg capsules.

You mentioned Concerta and ds's psychiatrist did recommend that first because he said it lasts longer and has less of a "let down" after it wears off, but unfortunately ds can't swallow pills. He has a terrible gag reflex and he would throw up for sure. We're working on teaching him to swallow pills with M&M's now. The Adderall is our first try at meds. I've known in my heart he was adhd for probably 2-3 years, but he just officially got the diagnosis a few months ago after he started seeing a psychologist.

How did the Concerta go today? I hope that helps with the emotional breakdowns. That's so hard to go through especially when you know that's not normally how your child acts.

Putting a pill in applesauce works really well for us. I was afraid DS would not be able to swallow pills, either. We started with 1/4 of Ritalin, then worked our way up to 1/2 of a tablet, and then a whole.

The ladies at school found it too cumbersome to use the applesauce, so when he would take a dose there, he would take it with a spoonful of water. Now, if I could just get him to take it with a CUP of water!

For what it's worth - we also have some of the meltdown behavior on Concerta.

hi, i just stumbled across these boards today. My name is Mary. I'm sorry, I dont have any advice. I have a question for the mom who said she was giving her son half of an Adderall Xr. Are you talking about the orange and white pill? My son is on 25 mg of Xr and I am going to have the dosage reduced before school starts back, but I have a whole bottle of 25mg. How do you break it in half? It has little beads in it and I would have no way of knowing how much was half. Or is this a different pill?

Thanks

Hi, it's the same capsule. I'm completely aggravated that the doctor told me to give him half a dose. I didn't realize it was a capsule with beads until I got home from the pharmacy. It is very hard to get an accurate dose and some days I know I've given him more/less than a 10mg dose. I'm splitting the 20mg and I pour just enough beads out into applesauce until the level gets to just above the 20 mark on the pill (if that makes sense). I called the doctor's office because since I'm keeping him at 10mg I want the 10mg capsules and of course the doctor is out of the office until next Monday. I looked on the Adderall XR website and it specifically says to use the entire capsule if opening it up to sprinkle on soft foods, so I'm sure this isn't the best way. I know what you mean about having wasted meds on hand now because I have 60 capsules on my kitchen counter and they will just go to waste after we get the 10mg capsules. I hope that answered your question!
