Is this really ADHD any ideas?

It has been a while since I have visited, but I have been reading some of the other messages and also doing some research online tonight. A bit of background I am the mother of 3 great children, a daughter 12 (ADHD & ODD), twins 8. 1st twin boy no problems so far, second boy ADHD and the reason for this message. He is in grade 1 as we kept him back a year because he just was not ready to start school, and due to the problems we had with my daughter in the education system. The problem is that this year he is very socially behind and has very poor behavior skills. Does not associate any behavior with any type of consequence. Spits at other children, swears, and grabs other children..No matter the consequence the behavior does not stop, suspended from school once, off the bus 5 times, been grounded, lost priviledges. nothing phases him. He seems to be in his own world. He is currently taking ritalin, which has just been increased. Does anyone have any thoughts. Thanks !!

Hi! The list of behaviors that you say your son is doing are classic behaviors of ADHD. If you want to, you can do a search and type in 'spitting swearing ADHD' - something along those lines and you will probably come up with some sites that talk of these behaviors being associated with ADHD. There's also a really good article called Swears, Lies and Videogames and you can probably do a search for it and find it. It also talks about these behaviors and has some good suggestions for handling them. I know it's frustrating but hang in there. Come back anytime - we're all here for you! Take care...

OMG you stole my son....I'm just kidding thou...But it sure does sound like him. When my son was in first grade we had problams too. He poured school glue in a child's ear,he stabbed a child in the hand with his penical,he gave two children bloody noses on the bus. It came to the point where the school told me not to send him to school unless i was coming with him for the whole day. I told the school the problams still happen even when i'm around so that was not going to solve the problam. I took him to the doc and they evalurated him and said he had ADHD. OK...fine..they put him on retian(spelling??) and the problams continued. I took him back to the doc..then they changed his meds to dexadrine time release and the problams might want to change meds because some meds make the problams worse. But the kind of behaviour problams you describe do sound like classic ADHD things. My daughter is ADD and she was first on dexadrine and that made her NASTY. So then they put her concerta which works so so. The only downfall to this med is that she won't go bed. But since school is almost over i will live with that until next school year but then i will have to try something else. My kids only get there meds during school hours. One pill in the morning before school and that is it. No weekends, holidays, snow days,or all summer. I hope this helps. But i would try changing meds first. You would be surpised what a difference it can make.

it sounds like you are talking about my son.

he hasn't been diagnosed with ADHD, but I do have him going to a counselor.

My son is in kindergarten, and has been suspended off the bus a few times, distrupts the

classroom so much that there were a few parents that requested their children not

be in my son's class next year. (i didn't exactly get along with these parents).

Regardless, he is a wonderful kid one on one, he will chalenge you to a good game

of chess, gets upset when the class goes to the math room and "all they do is count".

I fight with the teachers constantly since they do not want to send him to 1st grade,

because of his behavior. I'll take him out sooner than keep him back and torture

him another year in kindergarten.

I do not have my son medicated, since if he is interested in the subject he is able

to sit for hours working on it.

I'm worried about sending him to 1st its a longer school day for him and I'm just hoping he can handle it.

ok I started out replying to you but posted my own saga sorry about that, my thoughts ware with you.

I am so grateful for the responses I got to my message. My daughter who is 12 has ADHD, but she behaves so much differently than my son. I agree with your discussions with the school. My son should be in grade 2, but I started him a year later at JK because he just was not ready. Now he is struggling to stay on task and with the class sizes and cut backs, too many children to 1 teacher. He is on medication only while at school, not at home. I have experienced parents like that as well. We have thought about sending him to a counceller, but have not yet. We had sent my daughter at one point, but found the time spent with her was not warrented, it just seemed like play time.
