I would seek a Psychologist to do testing. Yes, you would be doing him a disservice by not finding out the cause, and meds are not something to be afraid of. You ARE doing the right thing

I agree. A specialist should do the diagnosis, not a pediatrician. So, if you get an instant diagnosis, ask for a referral to a specialist for confirmation. You really want to see a child psychiatrist, neuropsychologist or developmental pediatrician for an accurate diagnosis.

Let your son know that when you meet with the specialist, it's a "no shots" meetings and chances are, there will be some toys and things to do in the room while you talk to the doctor. Our son also has difficulty with transitions and change but did just fine with our appts with the psychiatrist and behavioral therapist. If you get there and his behavior does become extreme, understand you'll be there with the experts who will understand it best and can help you help him.

You son will still be a wonderful boy if he has ADHD and gets treated for it. In fact, what will happen is that now everyone else will get to see what a wonderful boy he is, not just his ADHD symptoms. In our son's case, medication and behavioral therapy have made all the difference in the world (especially the medication). People don't even know he has ADHD during the day when his medication is active.

Good luck!
