OMG i am embarrassed to say this but my 9 year old is having serious shoe tying lessons THIS weekend. We taught him at 5, but it didn't go well. He'd learn some, then forget. By 1st and 2nd grade he had some great shoes from L.L.Bean (sneakers etc) that didn't require tying. This year the Asics sneakers we bought have laces. We are spending time teaching him and he's getting it--but amazing to think that I have to do so much to get him to care about learning! Like if he does each step he gets a quarter! Did anyone else have a kid who didn't care to learn this!??

Well, my 6 year old learned last year, but doesn't practice very much - he has zip-up shoes. My 8 year old has still not learned. He's got slip on shoes. That was one of our goals for last summer, but needless to say, we didn't work too hard on it.

I tried teaching Joiner(8), but he has never learned. He does have problems with his small muscles in his hands, he gets OT (occupational therapy) for hand writing. SO no wonder he can't tie shoes. I just buy him zip up or slip ons for now. Maybe one day he will be able to do it, right now he can't and it's not worth the fight to try & teach him.

It's a great idea to set up rewards on your son learning how to tie. After he learns tell him there is a big surprise for him, like going to a movie.

Wow! I thought my son was the only kid who couldn't tie his own shoes... It helps to know he's not alone. We try occasionaly to go through the steps but he gets so frustrated and feels like a failure that it almost seems like it would be better just to wait until he really wants to do accomplish it for himself.

Hi newbie here, ds may be diagnosed with ADHD! I thought I would share a idea of how you could get your child to tie their shoes. This was a idea from a great friend...sit in a chair spread your legs apart, have your child sit between your legs and show them how to tie their shoes. See the reason she says it will work is because the other way is backwards to them, and having them face same way as you they can model you!!!!!!!!! Well, just an idea.
