Hi there,

I havent been on ivillage in a LONG time, since the birth of my son in June 2009 to be honest, lol. I think this is a good time to seek out the support of some other Mom's as my Son has been diagnosed with ADHD. He has been diagnosed early as he is just five. The specialist here in Ottawa said he is a "classic case" and felt confident with his diagnosis. This was back in August. He has been started on Adderall XR and we have seen AMAZING changes in our son. His ability to focus, complete tasks or even just have a normal conversation has been just an amazing transition to watch!

We are having two issues. The first is what I am most concerned with... SLEEP! The poor kids has SO much trouble falling asleep. Its getting to the point that he's still up talking to me at 10pm and then of course I have to drag him out of bed for school at 7am. Does anyone have any suggestions to help with this? Someone mentioned a "white noise" machine, would think help him settle or just stimulate him more?

Please help!!

Thanks

Jenny

Ps... Where do I get a new siggy... mine is ANCIENT!!! lol

Hi Jenny,

I realize you posted on here a few months ago, but I was wondering if your son is sleeping any better?  My 8 year old son also has ADHD and often nights, like you said, he is still awake at 10pm.

Thanks Smile

we use melatin 3mg works pretty good. I've always had sleep issues not related to ADHD and have tried everything. I sometimes use a fan but its more to block out noise. When you are trying to get to sleep sometimes every little thing can bug you. DS also has anxiety which I think too can lead to sleep issues. When he was younger we kept music on in the room until he was out. Now he shares a room with his little brother so that was no longer an option because it has the opposite reaction in his brother who doesn't have sleep issues. We didn't start with melatonin until DS was 8. I had issues with it causing crazy dreams, DS so far no issues. I'd say try the background noise see if you get a result. I'm not a fan of simply medicating especially a kid until I have exhausted other options.

Hi Jenny, welcome to the board!  I haven't tried it with my own son, but others have tried melatonin with good results.  Here are some articles I found about the supplement:

You should discuss it with his doctor first, just to make sure that it won't interfere with his ADHD meds.  I'm glad that you are seeing such great results on Adderall :)
