Sleeping--I ditto the recommendation for Melatonin; start at a very low dose, see if it helps.

Flip side is, you're VERY early in the process, and the sleep issues is one of the side-effects that can wear off with time. So you might get lucky & it'll be fine in a week or two. Things that helped with my kid, before we started Melatonin: playing music, hot shower at/after bedtime.

Yes, Focalin really only lasts 8 hrs (they've got some marketing idiot saying 12 hrs, but there's only 2 doses. Concerta's the only 3-dose ritalin that I know of). Homework: Yes, you can get a short-acting dose of Focalin to take in the afternoon for homework. But you'll end up in the same catch-22 as I do: The med messes up sleep MUCH longer than it is effective for school/homework. Plus if you get the reduced appetite side-effect, now it messes up dinner (for my kid, the increased ability to sit in a chair meant he ate MORE on meds at dinner time at that age). In elementary, I played around with the morning-pill time to try to clear some homework time. Now...well, in middle school, he can end up doing homework until 9 pm at night, that's 2 sets of boosters in the afternoon. SIGH. It's...well, it's all this dance we ADHD parents get to try to figure out, when to give what med & what works best for our individual child.

Melatonin also works for my 8yr old daughter. She was taking a 3 mg pill, half with supper and half about 20 min before bed. I get ours at Wal-Mart by the vitamins.
