Son up over 24 hours straight ...

Our seven-year-old son has severe ADHD and we give him melatonin to help him calm down and sleep at night after his meds wear off. Well, yesterday and today, he threw us a real zinger. The melatonin did absolutely nothing and he literally stayed up the entire night. He was hyper and whistling in his room. He came in and woke us a few times. When I got up at 5:45 am for work, he was still up. I gave him his meds this morning and he's still more hyper than usual (meds usually solve it). I had to keep him home from camp because I just didn't know what to expect from him.

I have a call in to his psychiatrist, but unfortunately her normally accessible nurse is on vacation, so I've had no word. Just wondering if anyone has gone through anything remotely similar with their ADHD child? I thought we'd been through everything with our son -- ADHD, OCD, depression, encopresis, extreme picky eating, sensory issues -- but this one has me baffled.

Ultimately gave him about 5 mg. melatonin, since 3 didn't work the night before. I think we'll go back to 3 tonight and see how it goes. In the meantime, I'm hoping I at least hear back from the doctor today ... pretty annoyed I never got a response yesterday. Our son was really out of it.

OH wow! Poor kid, poor you!

A child may HAVE ADHD, but it is not what they ARE. Never tell a child they ARE ADHD.

Well, after 33 1/2 hours in a row awake, he went to sleep. Never did hear back from the doctor (perhaps worse psychiatric issues after the 3 day weekend?), so I decided to up the melatonin a half a tablet and that seemed to do it.
