Does he have an IEP?

When my child's teacher starting pulling crap like that, I referred her right back to the IEP.

...and yes, I honestly think some teachers do not get ADHD, some do and when your child has a teacher that gets it, it's a wonderful school year, when the teacher does not get it, it's a year full of struggles for everyone.

I have a unique perspective on this in that I am a teacher and will soon become a full-time step-parent to a child with ADHD.

During my undergrad, I had to take a survey in exceptionality class. All general education and special education candidates had to take this class. Who you got for the class depended on what day you signed up for the class and what you got out of the class depended on who taught it. I had to take the class with a professor who thought the best way to educate us on ADHD was to watch a few videos on how it is over-diagnosed and not give us any practical tips on how to help those children we encounter who truly do have the condition. I can now see what a terrible disservice these types of videos do to pre-service teacher candidates and how it can lead them to believe it's an "excuse" rather than learning how to help kids like this in their classroom.

Perhaps the teacher is one of those who believe that it's over-diagnosed? I can't really say without knowing the teacher but if your child is receiving help with speech and goes to the resource room, he probably has an IEP, yes? If so, take your complaints to the special education director in your son's school and to the principal. If the teachers are not following the IEP, they are in violation.

As a side-note, I have required students to redo an assignment when I've felt they haven't put forth the effort or followed the directions. It all goes back to practice makes "perfect" but I can't recount a time when I've made an entire class redo an assignment.

It is the teacher that is the problem not you! I went through the same with DS's 3rd grade teacher it was hell and my suggestion is get him out of this class soon! The teacher has no skills at teaching ADHD kids. My son was ruined in 3rd grade although we chose not to hold him back but put him with a great teacher who brought him up to speed. He is now in 5th and struggling still with the teacher. We are trying to work it out. We have a 504, just below an IEP.It has really helped when used as a guide.

Hi,

Thank you for your posts! Yes, my ds has an IEP and I agree with the poster who said the teacher comes from a place that ADHD is over diagnosed etc. I have had many conversations with this teacher and she will tell me one things with regards on how we will approach homework or classwork but then do the total opposite!

For example, when my son came home all upset about being reprimanded and given extra HW for doing his HW during indoor recess, I called the teacher. I told her I didn't feel it was right that he was given HW for trying to be responsible, it wasn't a malicious act! She said he broke a rule! I told her again that HW is a struggle and that the sentences were a harsh punishment under those circumstance, she said fine! Well DS comes home yesterday and hands me a note from the teacher. He then went onto say that his teacher told him he needed to complete the sentences and asked why he didn't do them? The note I received said that even though we spoke about it...he was still required to do the assignment. I wrote her back telling her it wasn't going to happen and phoned the principle this morning! Still waiting for a call back!

I have to say this is the most ridiculous situation, I can't believe it has become an issue!
