Yes, Concerta is the same chemical as Ritalin, but in a MUCH different delivery system. It is also a different delivery them Adderall XR. Adderall XR is like 2 doses of Adderall stuck together, and the second dose kicks in 3-4 hours after you take the pill. Concerta, on the other hand, operates somewhat like the old "Contac" cold pills. It slow releases thruout the day, so you truly have an 8 to 10 hour coverage, without rebound. At least, that's how it worked for us. My older dd is 28 and STILL takes hers.

Big difference between the two, in our experience. Our son went into random rages when the Adderall wore off ... it was quite scary, especially in a very young child. We stopped Adderall after just a few days.

Concerta is a completely different story. He functions pretty close to a "normal" child when it's in his system. It gets us from about 8:00 am to 3:30/4:00 pm before wearing off. No anger at all as it wears off. He just returns to his regular bouncing off the walls, hyper, defiant self. We're waiting for school to start (1st grade) to see whether we need to add a Ritalin booster at the end of the day so he can manage homework and after school activities. Last time we tried a booster, he couldn't sleep, but it's been a couple years.
