? for those who've done med vacations

I'm driving myself crazy with this, for sure.

I really didn't plan for this to be a med-vacation summer, for sure, but it's mostly worked out that way. And I know there are differing schools of thought on that. But I want to use the least amount of meds that I can, and that is how things have worked out for us this summer.

DS is on 27 mg of Concerta for school. Because it gives us such problems with sleeping, we've mostly used 5 mg of Ritalin for those sleep-late days of summer when we have needed. I've given him Concerta a handful of times, and have noticed that he seems to be super-calm on it. Too calm for me, really. Like at my mom's the other day, all he wanted to do/seemed able to do was to sit and watch TV - for like 8 hours. We don't have cable at home, so Nickelodean and Cartoon Network are a treat, but all day????

I am wondering if this super calm effect is just because of the lack of tolerance or if it really is too much - ie should I call the doc and try the 18 mg dose again for school. Or if when we start back on a regular dosage schedule if the 27 mg will be fine?

As always, looking for BTDT or insight.

Karen

No experience with Concerta or med vacations (we're only on Day 4 of our first med trial) but I did want to say that how you described your DS was exactly how mine was on the first day of his meds. So maybe it's just cuz he's not used to being on it and after a few days on meds again he'd be back to 'normal'.

It sounds to me like your son may be over medicated. That was how my son acted when he was over medicated.

This is a good segway for a thought I have been rattling around in my brain. like a lot of people, I've gone to just occaisionally medicating my son for the summer. I don't want to repeat the over-medicating nightmare of the end of last year. So should I do a pre-school-warm-up? Start giving him his meds full dose a week or 10 days before school starts so that I can see if its ok?

This is our first summer with the meds issue. He's never had the two doses in one day over the summer, and goes days unmedicated. I remember when he first started ritilin, he got a migraine with the second dose. I don't want THAT to happen at school. They freaked and thought he'd had a seizure! Test after test later, it was determined to just be a migraine. Of course, he quickly figured out all he had to do was tell his teacher his head had an ouchie, and off to the office he got to go to wait for mom to come get him! The nurse and I had to get his doctor to tell her her was faking and didn't need to go home if he wasn't faking. Just some motrin and twenty minutes in a dark quiet place should knock it out.

What do y'all plan to do?

Both my kids would watch TV all day if we let them - one is on Concerta 18 mg and one isn't on anything. I'm not sure if this is a medicine/non-medicine issue - unless your child would have NEVER watched TV all day.

As far as the medicine break - we haven't tried it - we've just been on the Concerta for 4 months - and our son goes to summer daycamp since we both work, so he still needs to be on it. We did try weekends off, but he is happier when he's on the meds. Last time, we let him stay off, he bit his brother - not even out of aggression either. They were both in the kiddie pool and the seven year old (on Concerta during the week) was pretending to be a shark and bit his 4 year old brother. I really think he just got excited. He doesn't do stuff like this on the Concerta. Plus, we end up getting after him all day when he isn't on the Concerta.

Probably when he gets older we'll try a break - maybe over Christmas when I'll be home - not sure...

We don't medicate all summer. But usually before school starts I start giving him meds the week before. Partly because I want to see how he is on the same dosage. And partly because I notice if he's off meds all summer, it is like "starting over" somehow. Seems to have more effect even because he's not had it in awhile. I just do that so that i'm not sending him to school with it back in his system for the first time in months.

Good idea. I was kind of wondering when we should start back before school.

We normally were on 36 mg Concerta, but we have awful sleep problems with it. So during the summer when we don't have a homework issue in the afternoon, we are doing 20 mg Metadate CD. I give it to my daughter about 9am, and it takes us into the late afternoon. She is able to get to sleep by 10pm. On Concerta, if I gave it to her at 9am, she'd be up until 1am. This way she is able to eat too. (She's gained back a pound since June!).

If we don't do any meds, she gets in trouble all day long, fights with her brother, and basically annoys everyone around here. I don't want her to be in trouble all the time. I'll probably ask the Dr. if we could try 27 mg Concerta for a couple of weeks to see if that is enough for her, and to see if it helps the sleep problems.
