THX for all the tips - med is working

I wrote in last week about my 7 yr old DS not being able to swallow his med (Strattera). Thank you for everyone that took the time to write back. We've tried several of the hints, and stuck with it and it seems the med are working.

I would like to pass on a hint I recieved from the school nurse. She knows my DS very well and was being supportive in my decision to try meds. I was sharing my fustration about giving the dose and she shared a "trick" she has used for years with both her children and the children at the school.

She uses a small plastic water bottle and has them swallow the pill drinking from it. Apparently it curves the tongue in such a way to open up the back of the throat better than drinking from a cup. We practice with a tic tac first and now taking the med is no problem!

Bonus happy tale: Last year my son sat out much of his PE class as he ... well, lets just say he didn't play well with the others. The meds have worked so well for him that not only did he have a great class last week, but he was team leader with the teacher for part of it! I'm glad I stuck with it. I hope he has many more successes to share!

Yahoo!! My son is taking all four of his pills at once - "just like granddaddy". I'm so glad you are seeing a difference - we all need a sign that we are making the right decisions for our children. Our little sign of success - when the doorbell rings and somebody is asking for DS2 (the one w/ ADHD), rather than DS1 (Mr. Popularity). That just thrills me to no end!!

If it's Adderall XR your not supposed to open the capsule. One part is for AM & the other part is for later. It's time released. I used to take my allergy meds with my son. We would race & see who was the fastes. I showed him how to put his pill on the back of his tongue & fill his mouth with water, hold his head back so the pill will float back to the back of his mouth & swallow. Now he just pops them in & takes water.

Try putting it in yogurt. My son likes gogurts. We put the pill into the tube and he just swallows it whole...

Yes a water bottle would be just fine. I actually used Sprite the first few times to motivate him to try. Now he is finding water to be better. Probably the fizz factor!

Encourgage him to tip his head back as he swallows.

Good luck - I hope it works!
