Hi everyone, I am a newbie here, lurking on your board, and glad that I found it.

We were seeking help with our son at age three. Looking back, he was pretty much a neon sign for ADHD, but we wanted to believe he was just "spirited." He couldn't sit still, lacked focus and was very aggressive (zero impulse control ... he'd hit, spit, kick and do all sorts of horrible things at home and at preschool). He was just very extreme and we were constantly horrified at his behavior in public.

Our son was a late talker but when he started he pretty much started talking (very little time with just single words). Extremely bright, though, and it can still be a challenge to outsmart him with parenting strategies. His social skills have improved now that he's older (six) and on ADHD medication, but they're still not perfect. He is quite anxious around adults and needs constant reminders not to be rude around kids his age. That said, he has a lot of friends at school (he didn't at age three because of his behavior but medications have improved things dramatically).

At such a young age, it's tough to get any help and a diagnosis won't be made if it's ADHD until much older. You can still get medical help, though. We were seeing a child psychologist, then a behavioral therapist long before getting help with a psychiatrist (medication). Psychologists can help give you parenting strategies that work with ADHD kids sometimes.

Good luck!
P.S. Go to the website for ADDitude magazine. They did an article about a year or two ago on ADHD in preschoolers and I'm pretty sure it's archived on their site.
