Hi again. I've been lurking around here some more for a few months and waiting for answers on my DD. She is turning 7 this week and I thought we finally had things narrowed down and on the road to help, but we are going backwards.

Please, I just need to vent... DH has ADD (not medicated) and DD has been dx with mild ADD and depression or anxiety. She is currently taking Intuniv and we recently started Straterra (was on Adderall and Concerta, but had side effects). I'm broken. My house is in upheaval and I don't know where to turn. I recently got put on paxil for mild depression, but I think it stems from dealing with all this. Everyone in this house is so unorganized and difficuly to motivate and it all lands on me. DH is very good at his job and he blogs about political stuff, so all his focus goes there. When I need him to be there all day for an event, he is tired and miserable. Meanwhile, DD is overwhelmed and emotional.

I don't think the med mix is right yet. We have seen a psych and need to get in to a neurologist, but are on a waiting for an opening. I know they both need organization and structure to function well, but I find it impossible to keep them organized. They are both so all over the place all the time...

DD was doing better before starting Straterra, but has been having trouble sleeping all summer. She wakes up for hours at a time in the middle of the night. She is obsessed with our cats and won't leave them alone no matter how much they hiss at her or scratch her. She has 5 scratches just from this morning and I don't know how to get her to understand that she is causing them to scratch her. I'm afraid she is going to get hurt! I have a call in to her psych dr., but I just needed an ear to listen and some support. School is starting in 2 weeks and last year (1st grade) was a nightmare. It has to be better this year....

Thanks for listening!! I enjoy reading this board and knowing I'm not alone

A child may HAVE ADHD, but it is not what they ARE. Never tell a child they ARE ADHD.

Michelle is right on about the meds. If things are the same or worse, you should think about changing again, especially if she has been on the Strattera for awhile and there has been no improvement.

I know it is so tough trying to get your child to understand cause and effect. We struggle with that with my DS who is 6.

I can relate! It can be so hard when medication isn't quite right. I've also got a workaholic husband who just can't do full support with the kids to the degree I do. There are times I've wanted to throw in the towel because it's all too much.

I'd say if you're not "wow'ed" by the medication, it's time for a chance. When you find the right one, you will know. It took a few tries with our son but when we got the right one it made dramatic changes in our household. However, when it's not in his system, it's still chaotic. Last night, I sent our son to bed during dinner because he was just too much -- way too much drama, hyperactivity and defiance. When he's that way, he gets his younger sister (who doesn't have ADHD) to mimic his behavior, so it can be a nightmare.

Know you're not alone. This is a rough road that we're on. Hang in there --
