We just wrapped up two weeks of Vyvanse. 6 yr old DS was great at school, but we were having terrible tantrum like fits.

Ritalin LA and Vyvanse are two different meds, Ritalin LA is Methylphenidate, and Vyvanse is lisdexamphetamine. Vyvanse is more similar to Adderall.


You should expect quick results, it is s till a CNS stimulant med, so you should see something within hours, if not days.You should know within a week or so if it is the right one, or not.


I am surprised the Ped did not try a different dose of Vyvanse before changing meds, sometimes that is all it takes. Meds are trial and error, and it can take many meds, at many doses to find the right one.

A child may HAVE ADHD, but it is not what they ARE. Never tell a child they ARE ADHD.

Yes, it is common to try different meds and different doses. My DD has tried 3 different doses of Adderall and 2 of Concerta. I'd heard a lot of good things about Concerta but it was not effective for my little one so we went back to Adderall. She still has the occasional meltdown but she had those before meds and they have not gotten worse. Good luck and I hope you find what works best for you!
