What's wrong with my child?

Hello everyone,

Can anyone help me out here. I have a huge gut feeling that my son is suffering from some behavioural disorder but because he's only 4, doctor's wont give me a straight answer. Is it too early to tell if he has something? Do I really need to wait until he's 6 to find out? He is just non stop from the moment he wakes up in the morning to the moment he goes to bed. He still doesn't sleep through the night, he is constantly moving some part of his body. When you talk to him, he tends to drift off into space and he always gets distracted when I try to do school work with him. He is always hurting someone or destroying something as well. I need to know how to deal with this because I've completely lost it on him quite a few times. I need to know if he is just an active 4 year old or is it something else. My older son was never like this which is why I'm so concerned. Please help!

Hi, and welcome

A child may HAVE ADHD, but it is not what they ARE. Never tell a child they ARE ADHD.

It IS possible to be diagnosed this early. I absolutely know how you feel... i was the exact same way with my DS. It bothered me when I would lose my patience with him and fly off the handle. I would go to my room and cry (in private) b/c of all the stress he caused.

I noticed a change in DS when he was 18 months old, but chlaked it up to the fact that my daughter was just born and we had just moved to a new home. By age three I was losing my mind. ADHD runs in our family and I just knew in my heart that this was his deal. I researched online and all the "self" tests that i saw... he fit it like a T, except, obviously, in the questions that related to problems in school. I was able to get my pediatrician to give us a referral to a child psychiatrist. We had LOTS of paperwork to fill out, etc...lots of questions about him, us, my pregnancy...etc... He was diagnosed with ADHD at 3 1/2. They were ready and willing to medicate him then & there... but I wasn't ready for that. Just having the diagnosis helped us get him on an IEP in pre-school and he was able to get behavioral help (and still does). We finally had to start medicine when he was 5 1/2 b/c of the classroom setting he was in. Medicine has proven to be a HUGE difference, for EVERYONE.

I would ask your pediatrician for a referral to a child psychiatrist. Don't expect your pediatrician to be any more involved than that...most peds won't touch anything outside of basic care with a 10 foot pole.

Good luck and let us know how things go.

Obviously you can go the diagnosis route--the above poster explained well, I thought. I'd also go grab some of the books on parenting kids with ADHD--the parenting stuff in them works on all kids, not just ADHD/related. Behavioral modification suggestions, etc., etc. I say this because the wait times for the diagnosis can be LONG.
