104.5 degree fever

Sylvie's fever shot way up this afternoon. She looks horrible. I tried giving her some children's Motrin just now, but I can't really be sure how much got in her mouth, since she kept spitting it out and swatting the syringe away. I called the doctor and she said we had to bring Sylvie in tonight -- I have an appointment at 7pm, which I'm dreading... Sylvie usually starts getting ready for bed at 7pm, and I know tonight she's going to be even more exhausted than normal. Plus we pretty much never go anywhere after dinner (because her bedtime is so early) so this will be a major change in routine for her.
I'm so worried and I just feel so helpless! Please be thinking of us and wish us luck...

It is tough but really she will be much better if you go to the doctor. I just made it home and read your other post. I was going to recomend bringing her in to the doctor since she had a fever for a number of days that wasn't getting better.
You may be already gone but if not I recomend that you write a note to the doctors and make multiple copies. Then whenever you have to see another doctor, lab tech, nurse, etc give htem the note and tell them it is important medical information.
Here is the example of the one I wrote for Mike. It worked wonders and the doctors really appreciated it.
"My son, Michael, is high functioning autistic. Typically, he is extremely anxious about doctor’s offices. It helps him significantly to have everything explained clearly prior to it happening. He has a very hard time with figures of speech and sarcasm, which he tends to take literally, so even jokes made to help him feel better, may be upsetting. New people and changes also upset him. If these could be kept to a minimum it would be helpful. "

Thank you guys for your posts. We just got back -- she did *so* well! I'm so proud of her! And it wasn't an easy visit; they did a strep culture, a finger prick to test her white blood count, and a flu culture (which involves sticking a swab up her nose). The only thing she didn't want to do was climb up on the table -- she gets panicky about that -- but because I'd written notes explaining her condition (thanks, Renee) they let her sit with me on a low bench while they did everything. She was very pleased with the stickers she got at the end of the visit, and with her Bugs Bunny bandaid. She's upstairs now reading a story with DH, and hopefully she'll fall asleep soon.
Her strep culture came back negative, and since she doesn't have an elevated white blood count, they said it's not bacterial. We'll get the results back from the flu culture tomorrow evening or Thursday morning, but even if it is the flu, there's nothing much that can be done other than treat the symptoms. The nurse did suggest that we get Tylenol chewables or meltaways -- who knew they made those? I think those will go over *so* much better with Sylvia.
Thanks so much for letting me vent... I feel like I've been doing nothing else lately!

Did you get the results of the flu test yet? How is Sylvia feeling today? You must be exhausted too!
Teresa
Hi Teresa, thank you so much for asking about Sylvia! That's very sweet! We haven't gotten the results from the flu test yet; I'll call tomorrow morning. Basically, if it comes back positive, we should know by tomorrow morning the latest. If it's negative, they'll run the culture for all sorts of things, but that will take up to 10 days, and Sylvia should be healthy again by the time we find out. (So they'll call us and say, "So, for your information, she HAD such-and-such.")
I can't imagine that she doesn't have the flu, though... She's the only one in the family who didn't get the flu vaccine (her ped was only vaccinating kids 2 and under) and the rest of us are perfectly fine... but I guess we'll see. She's still feeling horrible today. DH was able to find the Tylenol meltaways and we'll give her some before bedtime, which hopefully should help. I'm feeling much better today... mainly because DH called in sick to work so he could help me out! (I actually called him at the office yesterday afternoon and told him, "You're taking the day off tomorrow!") Having an extra set of hands was HUGE... he was able to get Sebastian out of the house so I could focus entirely on Sylvia. Having this breather mid-week should make the rest of the week a bit easier to handle (I hope!) I just feel so terrible for my little girl... I hope she feels better soon!
