3 yrs old with PDD-NOS - speech ?

First, let say how thrilled I am that I found this chat room. I've been struggling with Sam's delay internally for a while (just sad that life has the challenge for him) I have spent the last hour reviewing the posts for the last 6 weeks and feel I have found a great board.
My son, Sam, was labeled with PDD-NOS almost one year ago. He just turned 3 so he is now moving from early intervention services to the local school system. My biggest concern is that he doesn't engage in conversation. He answers what and who questions but is completely incapable of answering a question like "what did you do in school today?"
I'm hoping for some encouragement here--any other moms out there with kids with PDD-NOS with similar communication delays that "mastered" it?
Thanks,
Elissa

Welcome to the group! I wish I could address your concern, but I'm in a similar situation with my youngest dd, Lily. She is 4.5, has PDD-NOS and is still struggling with conversational speech. I'm sure that there are others on the board that can give some insight, though. I look forward to hearing their responses too. I hope you enjoy this group as much as I do!

My son will be 5 next month and is very slowly getting better with a lot of nagging from me.

Welcome,
My spectrum kids are 11 and nearly 13. My oldest was initially dx'ed with PDD-NOS due to language delay then changed to Aspergers or HFA depending on who you are talking too.
I remember distinctly at nearly 5 years old thinking I would never have a real conversation with my daughter. Something that went beyond meeting basic needs or following a basic command. Now she is near 13 and we chat all the time. She is a huge talker and life is pretty darn good.
It isn't perfect. She still has some pragmatic problems. She has a tendancy to stick to favored topics and can have difficulty with topics someone else initiated but she tries really hard and is doing quite well I will say.
But I have high hopes for her future. She is currently a favored volunteer at a theraputic horsebackriding place and wants to be an instructor when she is older. I can totally see that happening and her being awesome at it.

HI Elissa
My son is 3.5 and gets speech therepy in his preschool and out paitent. Let me begin to tell you what a HUGE difference he will become from school. My ds is backwards around his peers, but with encouragement it has helped. My ds will start a conversation but it's on his terms.
It is a start. I didn't have that last year!!!! He's been getting services for a year now. I have seen a big impact it's made on him. I am trying also to do a library group (free-hooray) and he did ok yesterday.
It's ok for you to feel down about the situation. I still grieve time to time. ((hugs))
I just pick myself up and try the best I can to get the child involved. That's my best advice, get the child envolved with play groups (which can be intimidating) but he will pick of NT behaviors (hopefully).
I feel not putting our dx'd kids in a bubble is a best chance they could get from us.
Hang in there.

when Cait was little and still had her PDD-NOS diagnosis, did you think Aspie at all? I ask because Hannah has a PDD-NOS diagnosis primarily I think because of her speech/language delay (I really think she has caught up almost completely receptively) but everything else she does just really seems more Aspie to me, although Aspergers was ruled out because of the speech issues. Just wondering how Cait's language accumululation ended up in such a change in diagnosis....
Hello Elissa and welcome to our little corner of cyberspace.
Speech therapy, Speech therapy and more speech therapy.
When my son Peter was 3 he had NO functional language. He could not answer a "yes or no" question.
