Liam just can not sit still, is in constant motion; it is a huge issue at school obviously, but lately he is so preoccupied with movement his attention is getting worse (if that was ever possible:)

My oldest lost a lot of weight when she was on it. She was already skinny. You could see her ribs. Her handwriting got better. Her behavior didn't improve. It did not improve her impulsivity. It did seem to help take the edge off her fidgetiness. She was on it for 2 years and I decided it wasn't for her since it was the behavior that caused her problems over her hyperness and it worked on her hyperactivity more than her behavior. She was on 5mg in the morning and 2.5 in the afternoon.

Hi, my son is on adderall XR 25 mg and has been on it for 3 years and has been doing pretty well. he did tell me at the start of this school year he was having a hard time focusing and staying still but I'm thinking and hoping that it is because he was off of his meds all summer and we just started them back up again. He was on Strattera before the adderall and the adderall has seemed to help him a lot better.

Adderall XR was not our friend. Ian had horrible mood swings on it as it would begin to wear off. There are up and downs with Adderall XR -- I mean they sort of get bursts of it and it is not a continual steady amount. He had melt downs that would last hours and he was somewhat violent. He never had been before.

Ian has done a whole lot better on Concerta. The moods are much more stable and he seems much happier most of the time. He is definitely not zombied out. He's still very active and he sleeps better (although sleep continues to be a problem, it's much better than it was pre-Concerta).

What works with one kid doesn't necessarily work for another, and since he's on other meds your son might react much differently than Ian did.

Yup. BTDT. It worked well, except for one thing. DS had no appetite. At all. In fact, he started to lose weight and he doesn't weigh much to begin with. So while it was effective, we couldn't keep him on it. Good luck with it though. I hope it works for you.

Our oldest was on Adderall XR and did very well on it. His only side effect was a loss of appetite at noon...but he more than made up for it at breakfast and dinner! :-) After a while, we had to up the dose to maintain the same results, but had no problems with that, either.

We did switch him to Concerta several months ago because he started to hurt himself (pulling hair, biting nails until they bled, etc.). We don't feel that the behaviors were caused by the Adderall, however.

To be honest, I liked the Adderall XR much better than the Concerta. His moods seemed to be more stable, as did the hyperactivity. With the Concerta, he still has days where he's so out of control even I have a hard time being around him.

Like the others have said, every child is difference and there are no easy answers when it comes to medicating our children.

We have had positive results on it. However, the dev. ped. wanted us to take him off it for 30 days to see how he does with behavior and stemming. His behavior has got worse and his stemming has got better. I am not sure what we will do after the 30 days. Right now, the behavior is getting us some school evaluations. One thing bad about Adderall is that my son couldn't gain weight to save his life. He is not even on the kids weight charts. Since quitting it two weeks ago he has gained 3 pounds.

OH Lord, right now I REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY want to put Dave back on a stimulant but the only one he was on (ritalin) caused seizures so I am too afraid to try anything else but he is making me and everyone else crazy! He is even making himself crazy with the squirelly-ness.

Hope that one works for ya. I am so tired of this. Sometimes it is damned if you do, damned if you don't. My kids like to personally check out all the yucky side effects of meds so it makes it harder.

Point in fact, Cait decided that double vision side effect to her seizure med would be fun. Of course she chooses to do this to coincide with having some more possible seizure symptoms so don't know whether to increase, reduce or change all together. Don't want to change cause the one she is on has the fewest side effects. YEEESH
