Find a Conversation

I bring this up because yesterday, at Gymnastics, Liam had to go to the coaches office and talk with the director because he was in "Liam-land", not in our world at all. I was upstairs, in the viewing room, and I saw him being escorted off the mats. So down I went. I was told to "let Coach Bob handle it". ( I'm NEVER comfortable with things like that). So, I stood just outside the room, and I listened to their conversation. Now, that was very easy, as Coach Bob, the owner of the gym, is deaf. He reads lips. And, he talks quite loud! The just of it was, Liam was getting in trouble for not paying attention.
Before starting this gym session, I'd talked to Bob about Liam, and I'd given him plenty of 411 on CAPD. We had both agreed this session would be very trying on Liam. Over the summer, we had gone at an off time. The gym was not crowded, and there were only four guys in his class. Liam did great and he loved it. Actually, Liam still loves it. So, anyway, when they were done, I talked to Bob. I reminded him of the CAPD thing. we went to his office, got out the handout, and went through it. Everything Liam's coach was having issue with was on every handout. Bob was very good about it. He said he had forgotten to go over this with Liam's coach. After class, the four of us discussed it. We decided the coach could try some visual cues and prompts. Also, he will make sure Liam is in front of him, not off to the side when he is giving instructions. Other stuff like that. The funny thing was, Liam had no idea he was being so bad! He was getting so over stimulated, he wasn't paying any attention to what he was doing! Oh, also, he will be wearing his ear plugs for a while until he gets his bearings in this loud and boisterous environment.
The thing is, before the dx, I would have been disappointed in Liam, and, he would have been in trouble. I wouldn't have had any reason to think the coaches could be doing things differently. Yet, in my heart, because I know my child, a part of me would have felt something was missing. Instead, we three adults and one child made real headway! Anyway, I just thought I's share this good aspect of getting a dx.
