The new office and schedule for Kyle aren't working as well as everyone hoped. The Autsim consultants told us all it would not be a quick miracle fix and we'd have to give it time. I think everyone was really hoping they were wrong.
He had two bad days this week. The good thing is with the changes they now see clearly its the gen ed setting (not the curriculum) causing the meltdowns. The autism consultant said today we need to seriously look at the possiblility of changing him to a more self contained setting.
This weeks plan: Tweek the schedule, its too wordy and long and doesn't allow for changes or choices. Work every morning with Kyle role playing taking a break with his break card. The Principal is going to meet with the Super Intendent and the Head of Special Education to talk about possible programing options for now and next yr or a change of placement. They are not admitting to defeat just yet, got to give it one more week, but they are getting close. :( Kyle will not be happy if he has to go to another school. We will meet again next friday to see how its going and find out about our options.
I feel numb at this point.

((((hugs)))) man, this has just been a really rough time for Kyle! I hope another week sees improvements. Glad they're still tweaking and willing to discuss whatever it takes.

He may not be happy at the thought because change is scary. However, once he sees it he may surprise you. This has been our experience each time and there have been a few placement changes. If it is the right change, you will see how quickly they are happy and improve.
I would recomend taking him to see it. Present it as just a possible option or something really low key like that. If it is lower stress and he is more comfortable there he will know it (and so will you) pretty much right away.
We had to change Mike's placement 3 times. Each time he DID NOT want to hear about it. The idea of change was very upsetting. But in each case it was the right decision. He was able to visit in advance and he loved it and was comfortable immediately. Most recently this pertains to my posts about the SN school we visited but even before that it was in 3rd grade when he switched to the SDC class and in 2nd when he switched to his current school.
