another speech path question
| Mon, 11-20-2006 - 12:05pm |
I am thinking about putting jacob in ST b/c he is not making gains with his language development. He has tons of single words and seems to be getting more each day, but is not really combining words with the exception of a few (I want milk, I want..., dada car).
Question is, what will a speech path do with a kid that is 2 years old? HOw do they do therapy with him. I did a toddler talk program at the hospital this summer, but it really wasn't that useful
Thanks
Sonya

Hi Sonya,
My DS started speech when he was 18 mos. old. We had to teach him everything. Your DS already has the "I want..." concept down, which was a big breakthrough for my son. They can do so many things with little guys, using play to teach them. For example, in order to teach our DS the "I want..." concept, they found a toy he liked to play with. ST modeled the behavior, then DS had to say "I want..." in order to play with the toy. Basic ABA, I guess.
Later, when we were trying to teach pronouns, ST had him look at photos of boys, girls, men, women. At first he just had to identify which was a boy or girl, then gradually move up to saying, "he, she" etc. We had a problem with pronoun reversal too (DS would say "You want juice" when he meant "I want juice.")
We also had to teach him how to ask questions. ST did that with games, same thing for eye contact. Right now at age 4 we are working on having a back and forth conversation. Everything DS does he gets a reward (I guess the correct term is "reinforcer!") for, most often playing with some cool toy in the ST's office. Or playing a favorite game with the ST.
So I think it is really worth it to try speech at an early age. They will come up with a list of goals that you will agree on and work through them.
I don't know if that helps or not.
