Anyone do the "walks."

Since I am 45 minutes from San Diego its hard for me to really meet at the Autism groups I have found. Especially the ones for Aspergers. I was thinking of doing the Autism walk in San Diego, but that got canceled due to the fires and now there is one in Orange county which is going to combine both.

I did the NFAR walk in San Diego last spring and they are doing it again in March. I like that walk because it gives money to local programs for people with autism. I am not big on raising money solely to fund a cure but that is a different political issue all together.

My kids are older and have actually felt upset by some of the "Cure autism" type stuff that is out there and thus a big part of my feeling on that one, but we do the NFAR one (hehe, have my shirt on today actually as I look down)

I met Molly there and another board mom who isn't around much these days. Much of my family walked as well (grandparents, aunts, uncles) and some friends.

With this walk you don't have to ask for money. There is a contribution if you walk and you can ask people to walk with you on a team. You can also have a spot on the website set up if you are a captain for people to contribute in your teams name but it is not neccessary. I just sent an email out to tons of folks I know and asked if they wanted to walk with us. They signed up on my team and a few people donated extra.

The only caveat is that the day was VERY stressful on Mike. He understands what it entails now and he has mentioned wanting to go again but I am not sure if he will make it. It is loud and busy and not terribly autism friendly. They had a "quiet" sensory tent to help chill out but put it right next to the stage and in the middle of all the tents. DUH!

I think my SIL has done the orange county one in the past. Do you have a link? Maybe my kids would like that one depending.

What is the walk you are talking about ? That one sounds "up my alley," so to speak.
