anyone ever try Concerta?

DS not only has AS but major anxiety issues (and mild ADD). Neuro suggested putting him on a low dose of Concerta. She said it might help "take the edge off". Has anyone had an experience with Concerta? Heard anything about it? Good? Bad? Just trying to gather some additional info on it before I make a decision to give it a try or not.

TIA, Christie

My older dd takes Concerta, but she takes it for ADHD (no other issues). It has worked well for her, in the past she had taken Dexadrine and then Metadate. One of the side effects can be loss of appetite, but that didn't seem to affect dd. She also has some problems sleeping, but I don't know if I can attribute that to the meds.

Thank you for sharing that info with me - I appreciate it. I still have a lot of research to do - I have a call into his ped - hoping she'll have some input (her oldest son is autistic), heck, she might even have some personal experience with it.

Thanks again,

Hi!
my son will has been on Concerta for the past 2 years,he has PDD and ADHD and we have had no problems with the Concerta. It does affect his appetite tho and he's thin to begin with.We just try to get him to eat alot before he takes it and when it wears off(we usually have dinner around 5:30 so I can get something healthy down) and lots of snacks before bed. He started off on Adderall which made him moody and aggressive but I've not seen it yet with the Concerta.Hope that helps!

Thank you, it is good to know how some other children are doing with it....the loss of appetite does concern me....he is such a picky eater as it is....I have a difficult time getting him to eat anything.

My AS son did not do well with concerta. He did ok at first and it seemed to initially help attending but he slowly became more and more withdrawn and rigid in his thinking. My autistic nephew does take it as well as a couple other ASD kids I know with good results.

But just as a general warning, stimulants can cause some kids with ASD to become more inflexible and more withdrawn.

But Mike just didn't do well with any of the meds he tried. Seems he just can't find one that works with his system so he is on a diet and supplements.
