My oldest is 15. He's Dx is ADD-nos. He has lots of aspie characteristics. He's going to take drivers ed next year, he'll be 16 then. He didn't feel he was ready until a little later, and he's still not sure he wants to get his license. We're only pushing a little, he will make the final decision on when he actually wants to get his license.
I don't really have any ideas, i just know for our son it's a maturity issue. He is almost always a year or 2 behind his peers in development in social, executive function and organizational type things.
I don't have any idea if our autistic son will be ready when he turns 16 or not. We'll have to make that judgement when the time comes.
Sorry. Just my mom-ness of aspies shining through. I am still scared of the drivers ed thing and thankfully have just a few years left to live in denial of that one.
Don't know what to tell ya. I think in part I would let him fail the class and retake it later. He doesn't sound ready or really invested in doing it. This is something he is really going to have to put in the effort himself on because of the safety issue involved in it.
Plus I think the extra practice for him would be a good thing. I have done some thinking on this and talking with DH. He didn't get his licence until 19 and has never had a major accident (one fender bender like 5 years ago in his 30's). He has some traits himself and just didn't feel he was ready. I think it may be a good idea with my aspies to just give them that extra bit of time. I know drivers ed is pricey, but the cost of insurance going through the roof or losing your son because of an accident is infinitely more costly.
Tasha,
