Hi,

I'm trying to find out how other families cope when Mom(me) has depression and one of the children is autistic?  I've been feeling so overwhelmed lately.

Hi there -

I've got more anxiety than depression, but I can totally relate. It's rough. And I don't have the personality that looks on the brighter side. Everything that he does embarasses me (while ds is on the spectrum, he has some other language issues that make him say inappropriate things, while no ill-intent is there, they aren't always nice things to say). Some days I can laugh it off. Some days I can't.  I worry about his future. All that fun stuff.

I'm on medication for anxiety. It helps. Do you talk to a therapist or are you on medication? Yoga is supposed to be wonderful (but I can't find a class that fits my schedule). I like to read to get me out of the "OMG" frame of mind, especially if it's been a really rough day.

You're not alone at all. I was diagnosed with major clinical dpressoin back in 2011, about 6 months after my DS was diagnosed with PDD-NOS. It gets extremely discouraging and overwhelming. Even though I'm doing much better (from a result of anti-depressants, therapy sessions, healthier lifestyle, etc.) there are still times when the ASD abyss seems more than I can bear. My advice? Lean on your support system. Reach out to other moms (like you're doing now). And take everything one step at a time, one day at a time. Hope that helps a bit!
