We're in Central PA-Centre County-near Penn State, we are a fairly small community but I think the services are great. Tom just turned 5. He attends a 3-hour/day, 4 day/week preschool in the autism support classroom. While there he gets ST and OT. He could have PT if he required it. They have a psych on call and a behavior guy on call. In the same preschool they have a longer class for kids who need more stuff and a regular preschool with some inclusion kids, Tom visits this class sometimes. This is all through our intermediate unit (instead of school district) and is free in prep for kindy. As the pp's said medical assistance is available and will pay for most additional therapies.
Tom is going to kindy in the fall and our school district has been wonderful about accomodations for his needs. This is not always the case but we really did luck out.
And I know someone who transferred their IEP into our intermediate unit and they had no trouble at all getting a continuation of services.
I know nothing about PA, but I am on long Island. There are at least two other Long islanders on the board. (and they say it's not an Autism cluster...).
Just wanted to say that I've heard that Central PA is an autism cluster too. There is some debate about whether it is some kind of naturally occurring thing or whether people move here on purpose because of the services and proximity to a university with a major speech program etc.
Well in Pa things are done sligthly differently.
