Hi,

I am just wondering if anyone is from this area. I have a lot of questions and would like some info on resources. My daughter has an IEP and has been having ST and OT for a few years. I have a neurologist, but not sure we are going in the right direction for her and getting her the right help. Any info would be great.

Thanks, Rachelle

I don't know if we haves moms up there currently, but we used to. I know she had her son in a specialized school. My daughter went to mainstream K and did well there. It works so long as you have the right supports.

Try looking up Michelle Garcia Winner. She is based up there and my understanding is that lots of Speech paths use her methods up there. It is a speech language approach to social skills specifically for HFA/AS/PDD-NOS type kiddos. She has a couple really good books too that explain it.

Hi Rachelle,

I'm in that area, and have a DS dx'd HFA.

Do you have a diagnosis? I'm sure you already know there's the MIND Institute in the area - although it's tough to get in the clinic there without a referral. You can do a research study though, if you're interested.

Are you familar with FEAT? You can go to feat.org, surf their site, and join the mailing list. There's a handbook with many BTDT parents who serve as mentors. They also help with advocacy when your dealing with school districts and the Regional Center. There are monthly parent meetings and (depending what part of Sac you're in) there are smaller support groups.

Most the time I don't feel like I have a clue, but I've made a few friends through FEAT who can guide me or get me the answer I need.

HTH!
