APE evaluation

Why do I even bother asking these people for an eval?

Can you tell me am I crazy or would you read this the same as I am.

Backgound, the PE class the APE observed is just with the kids from Cait's aspergers class. There are about 6 kids in it and all with AS and all the others are boys. But it is not a regular PE class.

"Caitlyn did a great job during her assessment. She was cooperative but very self conscious of being seen by her peers. Her gross motor skills were age appropriate at this time. Caitlyn lacked the self motivation to try her best. She is a very capable young lady who needed to be reminded that she can accomplish the task at hand if she put her all into the activity. I observed caitlyn participating in her Physical Education class. I observered her jogging, running, waithing for her turn, playing four square, throwing, catching, and observing the rules of the game. Socially she got along very well with erh peers and enjoyed the interaction she had with all of them. I was very impressed with her ability to accept when her turn was over. She is in the most apporpriate place to continue to learn age appropriate games and skills"

Then the next paragraph is 3 sentences saying she doesn't qualify for APE. That is it. The entirity of a report I had to wait 50 days to get.

What bugged me? (other than it being pathetically short)

1. The assumption that Cait didnt want to try her best. That she just isn't trying. I hate people who think that of her when she usually is trying very hard but is very nervous or doesn't understand.

2. Says she is age approprate but there is no standardized test, no age equivalent, no nothing. Cait can throw and catch about as good as an average 6-7 year old and rarely makes contact hitting a ball.

3. Half the friggen report was on Cait's behavior not on cait's motor skills. HELLO what is this woman there to asses?

Then she has a list of "skills Cait has mastered". What is the criteria for mastering those I would like to know.

GRRRRRRRRRR. I hate useless people.

Renee,
It's just the same old story just another name! I hate hearing someone say she's not trying her best when in actual fact she is probably trying harder than anyone else to keep it together. I heard the same kind of stuff at Jakes IEP meeting. If someone told me one more time that he was age appropriate in most things I think my head would have blown off. Why can't these people just be honest and say the real reason why they turn down services that your child or my child would benefit from? I can deal with the fact that there is too little funding or not enough trained people to do the job but don't tell me my child is not pushing themselves hard enough. ARRRGGHH!!!

That's been my experience too with school PT and adaptive PE. Kyle does supposedly get an adaptive PE consult 4 times a yr where she gives the reg. ed. PE teacher advice. It is better than nothing. I'm sorry you had to wait so long for the pathetic report.

I got a question.....all of this stuff is new to me......what is an example of APE? I mean, how would it differ from regular PE? Sorry if its a dumb question but I haven't a clue.

I may not know about the program - but even I can tell that the report was ludicrous......it solely talked about her social skills and nothing to do with PE/motor skills.....and then to state that she does not qualify! I'd be PO'd too!

And on top of that - her math grade/review......hhhmmmmmm.....still pondering the partial homeschooling for next year?
