Darn it... I wish I were next door to you or something. I'm (I believe) an undxed Aspie and have a BA in Math... I've taught/tutored in both high school and college. I remember being in college and having a Math Lab tutor ask why he had never seen me in the lab... well at the time I hadn't needed help yet anyway, but I knew he would *never* see me in math lab looking for help. (Although I was there as a tutor a few years later.) I don't ask for help... I beat my head against an idea until I defeat it. (No, not *quite* literally...lol.)
Anyway... I 'hit the wall' your son is hitting in Calc II and I always told my students that *everyone* who goes far enough in math will it that wall at some point so it is *soooo* much nicer to hit it early before you have it in your head that *I* don't have to work at this, I just 'get' it. Pre-Calc is pretty late to hit it as well... so I know it's got to be a jolt to him. :(
Like I said... wish I could come over and fight with it with him a bit. I've always been decent at 'backing up' to the level of the student and I know so many bright, educated mathematical folks (like your hubby) just can't do that. For them it's as frustrating as explaining counting to five to a toddler... you just can't remember *not* getting it so it's hard to be patient with them and you both just end up in tears/straight jackets if you keep trying!
If he has any specific questions that he is comfortable asking... I could *try* to do it through email... but I tend to write/draw while I explain things so it's hard to do with just words. Just let him know that he is free to ask me (email through my profile) if he thinks it would help at all. (I know how much hitting that wall can sting when you just breezed by before!) Maybe I could at least say something that would spark your hubby to explain it better than I did... but in a way he hadn't thought of saying it before.
Hi, my daughter , who just BARELY escaped the ASPERGER test, also struggled with PRECAL. THings came in too easy for her and she actually had to study for precal. My DH tried to help, but it was a disaster. So I hired a one on one help to come and teach at home inspite of her denying that she needs help. Her classmates went to SYlvan learning center. Then she just got a B in that course. But when she took calc, she was so much more confident and the subject was not as difficult as precalc. Good thing she decided to do he AP AB and BC after her calc and got 5 and 4 respectively. SO hang in there and get him some help.
Welcome back Tasha.
I am sorry I can't be of much help with giving you advice, but I know there are a couple of people on the board who can help.
