Artificial flavors

I'm sure I've brought this up before, ages ago. I'm really annoyed that in the U.S. there is no requirement to list specific artificial flavors on food packages.

We've suspected for a few years that David is sensitive to certain food additives, but we've never been able to really narrow it down. I think a certain type of mint flavoring is a culprit, because mint chip ice-cream is usually a problem. Of course, I forgot that must include mint chip ice-cream sandwiches, which we just bought! I've learned to steer clear of all Mother's Brand cookies and any Dreyer's ice cream that contains artificial flavor.

The thing is, though, his "symptoms" are not the things people usually are willing to attribute to food additives. He just gets goofy. Okay, that's nothing out of the ordinary! But he gets goofy at inappropriate times. Oh, wait. LOL! I'm not explaining this very well. He gets goofy at inappropriate times when he would ordinarily not be goofy. And he can't control it.

I guess the reason I'm bringing it up at all is just to vent about how hard it is to live in our world without being innundated with all kinds of crap masquerading as food. We try so hard to avoid known triggers, but it's impossible. I just thank my lucky stars he doesn't have a life-threatening food allergy! He gets really annoying, but at least he lives through it.

And of course there's the endless amount of junk food that gets brought to school by parents who want to win brownie points by being "involved."

Oh, my. David is finally calmed down and asleep. I can finally allow his little brother to go in there and climb into bed. It's a pain when your brother is acting so hyper that you can't go into your own room to go to sleep until 10 pm.
