Greetings,

My son had his first appointment with the psychologist today (the same one that dx'd my daughter with autism) and she gave me the Asperger Syndrome Diagnostic Scale (along with a few other forms, BASC-2 and Vineland-II) to fill out for my son.

You got me - I filled out so many different scales and forms, I probably have filled that out, too.

I will say that even if you suspect AS, seeing something like that in black and white can change you.

I have filled it out a few times. It is similar to many of the observation scales and are tough to fill out and can be a bit biased because it totally depends on the observations and understanding of the person filling it out. For instance, once 3 different people filled one out for Mike at the same time. Myself and 1 teacher scored high probability or what ever that was, another teacher scored low. However, this teacher totally refused to accept that Mike may be on the spectrum at all due to personal reasons (she had a very similar dd who she refused to accept may be on the spectrum)

Remember, it is not a firm diagnostic tool. It is merely a observation scale that is one part of determining if a child may be AS. That is why it never says "definitely aspergers" or anything similar. Only "high probability" etc.

Well it was a sad situation over all. You see this womans XH and dd both died in a car crash the previous summer and the other dd was in the car and injured but survived. It was the AS-like dd who died. I think in many ways Mike reminded her too much of her deceased dd and after the fact it was just too painful to admit that anything else was there. She was 6th grade when she died and attended the same school, Mike was in 2nd grade then. I had heard about the girl through friends and the teacher even had said that lots of people tried to dx the girl is AS but they were all wrong in her oppinion, and we were wrong about Mike too.

We ended up changing his schools by 1/2 way through the year. It was better for both he and the teacher. She took a cebatical the next year and still is not back to fulltime teaching is my understanding. She never should have come back that year. She really needed a full year off at the very least.

I am still very sad for her. I hear she was a wonderful teacher, it just was not the right time for either of them.

Oh that is really quite tragic.
