asperger's in toddlers

Hi! This is my first post to this board. I have two boys Matti (ASD), and Nate (NT). I was hoping to learn more about what Asperger's Syndrome kids are like when they are toddlers. I know each one is different, but I was hoping to hear about some general trends.

My oldest is 3, and can read and write many words. He can count in three languages. He is verbal, but does not talk in sentences. He has a very high capacity to learn--he learned to count to 100 in one day---but only if it is something that he has a very high interest in (letters, numbers, shapes, colors). He has what I would describe as a high level of frustration although he is usually not aggressive.

Is it possible that at some point his dx would change to Asperger's? Did any of your children behave this way when they were younger?

Hello and welcome,

We have several kids here on the board whose DX has changed as they got older.

Sure he could likely be changed to Aspergers at some point but Aspergers is also an autism spectrum disorder so really there wouldn't be much of a change. My dd's did change from PDD-NOS to Aspergers. This was the same because when my DD was first diagnosed 9 years ago they didn't use ASD then. PDD was the ASD at that time. It was, yeah she is on the spectrum but we are not sure exactly where, we are saying PDD because she has a language delay.

Over the years we have been to various docs for both my spectrum kids for various reasons and check ups. They have both received the gamut of ASD diagnosis with PDD, autism and Aspergers depending on the beliefs of the tester. The one think that remains is that they are both on the autism spectrum though they differ greatly. It doesn't change who they are really, it is just a means to an end (ie accessing services).
