This is for all you parents to give you hope. My son, Christopher is 14 and just finished eighth grade. He was diagnosed with AS when he was 6. We've been through a lot--like some kids here, he could be violent and out of control. Like some kids here, he has had HUGE sensory issues. He has perseverative behaviors. He has a lot of trouble making and keeping friends. He has obsessive interests. He's also bright, artistic, a great student, and has a keen sense of justice.
And this kid was one of eight elected to serve on the student senate for the freshman class next year at the high school! Part of his platform was that he could represent the kids who were not popular--the special ed kids and the non-jocks and the ones without many friends--to make sure that their interests are heard by the student government.
I'm so proud of him I could bust! He was also one of 30 kids (out of 300) who earned the Principal's Award at eigth grade recognition last night--given to kids with good grades, good character, and good attitude.
He's come a long way, and your kids can too!

Great job Mom!! Thanks Elizabeth for posting this. Especially during this end of school where we struggle the most. So was your son in spec. Ed or mainstreamed. DId he have an aide.
Sorry for posting too many questions,
Anandhi
My son has always been mainstreamed and never had a one-on-one aide, but has received support services for his entire school career---occupational therapy, social work, social skills group, counseling, resource room, and support for his teachers, too (workshops, meetings with the autism specialist, etc.)
In middle school, we have been particularly blessed with a fabulous resource room teacher who has advocated for him consistently for the past two years. She has created space for him when he needs it, challenged him when he needed it, and made sure that everyone in the school, from the principal to the security guard, had a basic education on Asperger's Syndrome.
