Bad counsler session and...

First I'll say some good news. We are getting our second opinion. We have an appointment!! We are going in Feb to see a different child psychitrist. Hopefully this guy won't turn out to be like the previous guy.

Today, though was Dakota's counsler appt and, his behavior was quite annoying. He didn't want to be there so it went rather badly. He kept saying stupid, silly words and wouldn't answer any questions. Kept making up little fibs/stories. He several times opened and slammed shut the door. His nonsense was getting pretty bad and the counsler tried asking me questions but Dakota wouldn't sit still nor stop talking about silly stuff. I ended up having to give him my mp3 player for him to listen to and have him sit on the floor by the wall. He began to calm down and lay on the floor listening to the music while I was able to talk to the counsler on what was going on at the school and at home. We decided that he wouldn't meet again with Dakota until after his appt in Feb.

I just wish I could find out what is going on. I wish I could look into my son's mind to get some understanding.

Those situations are terribly frustrating. First, because their behavior is just plain embarrassing and you hope the counselor is understanding. They are supposed to be but that isn't always the case. And Second, it can feel like such a waste of time after you have taken the time to make the appointment, make all the arrangements and changes in schedule, waiting, driving and then if you can't get out all the concerns you had or feel like you got some good input it is just frustrating.

Often there are just a host of reasons why the child just cannot help it. THey are so overstimulated that they are out there. Doesn't make it less frustrating though.

On the good side though, you have found a way to be able to talk during these appointments. Never forget that MP3 player. I have found gameboys great for this too. Particularly if the waiting room is a long experience because that will set off mine everytime. I have also learned not to take all 4 when I have an appointment like this or to make a separate one just for myself so I can talk to the which ever professional I need.
