Dee,

Did you say your son was on Risperdal? My son (who trained after 5 yo) has had regular night potty issues since we started him on Risperdal last year. I know it makes them drousy, so I don't know if it had something to do with that, but it seems likely, because before that he was not having issues...

My son is also intact, and honestly when it is light pee in the pullup, I swear it is because he has so much foreskin that it just kinda gets stuck in there and then trickles out while he's sleeping! I don't have any issues with my NT 4 yo, he trained just before he turned 4 and stays dry at night, although I make both of them wear pullups (helps big brother be less self-conscious!).

Good luck!

Hi Dee,

I guess I would wonder about the drug side effects first. Eric was also a late pottier. He too went for about a year dry at night, then started niagra falls at night. With us though, this coincided with his witholding bm's during the day. We ended up at the GI, long story, but the GI told us that the backup in his colon was pushing on his bladder at night. Once we got the constipation/colon/bm problem under control, the "niagra falls" part has subsided. He does have the occassional wet, but a "pee pad" takes care of that pretty well. I think I got them from the "one step ahead" catalog. (DS will NOT wear pull-ups anymore, as those are "for babies"!)

Another thought, is there a certain time each night when Liam wakes up wet? My neice had this problem and noticed her daughter awoke wet at the same time. So she would set her own alarm and purposely wake the little one up about 30 min. before the time she usually got wet. After awhile, little one awoke on her own to pee.

If you can't figure it out, maybe a urologist would be wise. We waited way too long to take Eric to the GI, thinking the constipation problem would solve itself with all the things we tried. In retrospect, I wish we had gone earlier.

HTH. Good luck!

Yes, but there was an interval between all meds when he was med free and he was still bed wetting.

Mike wet the bed for a long time. I spoke to the dev. ped about it and she said it was common until at least 5 and would worry about it after that. She wanted to first start with trying to wake him at least 1x a night to go and also a star chart for staying dry along with what you are doing (no drinks after 7pm). That helped at bit and at least his wetting went down to a couple times a week rather than everynight. We also had him strip his own bed and help clean up. There was a night time alarm he could wear if he started to wet himself then he would get up and go. We didn't go that route because he is impossible to wake when he is asleep so we figured it wouldn't work.

Concerta helped some (the one good effect) but actually he finally stopped wetting (you guessed it) the same time we took him off all of his meds and cleaned out his system. Also when we took him off sugar. I really think the kid is borderline diabetic and would drink and pee all the time. By regulating his blood sugar it helped that part.

At any rate, he could have just grown out of it too around 9. It isn't that uncommon especially amung our kids to wet the bed until about that age. I had a friend who's NT son wet until he was 10 or 11. They tried the meds and everything.

I doubt a urologist will really help all that much other than what I told you. I doubt they will do any testing for something wrong at this age and may just suggest yet more meds to help stop it.

Just read all the posts. How long was he med free? Some of those take a long time to work out of the system plus the fact that the meds may have started the routine of peeing at that time like you said.

Try waking him at night and see if that helps. Mike still occasionally does it but it is a few times a year rathter than a week.
